Cacoo
www.cacoo.com
Cacoo is a Web 2.0 tool that allows for student and teacher collaboration
through the use of online diagram tools. Cacoo allows for charts,
templates, and images to all come together on one page. Along with
these features students can invite other students to access their page.
To begin the collaboration the student will have to access cacoo.com.
From here, the website is viewer friendly, providing simple steps for the
online user to begin creating their own project. After completing the
login steps, the student simply clicks the share button and enters
another students email in order for the collaboration on the screen to
begin. Students can collaborate together easily through the chat box,
the tool bar at the top, and through the stencils and templates that are
placed on the right side of the screen. Cacoo is not only a fun and
creative way for students to collaborate but also has features to export
the finished project such as PDF, so the teacher can examine and grade
the project.
Cacoo is a Web 2.0 tool that can examine student collaboration through
different projects, subjects, and grade levels. Some excellent ideas that
can be incorporated with the use of this tool is PK-12 are:
-SOL 5.12 Geometry: The teacher will split the class into small groups.
Each group will choose three plane figures. The teacher will also give
each group member his or her own color. On Cacoo each group will work
together to demonstrate their knowledge of plane figures by placing or
creating a visual of their plane figure, a self created definition of each
figure, and describing the results of combining and subdividing each
plane figure. Each student will be responsible to use their own color that
was assigned to type their information that was contributed to the
assignment.
-SOL 4.5 Life Science: The teacher will assign groups to work together to
demonstrate the class knowledge of food webs and life cycles. Each
group will collaborate to decide which organism they want to use for
their project. By using the flowchart template on Cacoo each group will
show the food web and life cycle of their organism. At the end of the
project, each student will be graded using the three-grade system. The
student will give a grade to each partner in their group, a grade for
themselves, and an overall grade of the project will all be totaled
together to have a final grade on their project.
-SOL 6.5 Reading: The class will have a choice of four different books
selected by the teacher. The class will be grouped depending on which
book was chosen. All of the members with the same book will be a
group. Each group is responsible to create a chart that includes the
elements of a narrative structure, including setting, plot, and character
analysis. The project will be saved, printed, and each group will present
to the class.

Ideas for how the

tool can be used
in PK-12

Positives:
1. Cacoo allows for the students to use different templates, shapes,
and designs to incorporate learning through different ways. It
allows a lot of flexibility for the teacher in which lessons she
wants to use Cacoo for. It can be used in almost every subject.
2. Cacoot saves the students work even when you have not clicked
save diagram. This feature is nice for students considering many
forget to save their work.
3. The chat and interactive screen that is featured on Cacoo allows
for students to collaborate with one another right on the screen.
The chat box will make the collaboration process less of a
challenge. When students are younger, it could be challenging for
them to communicate with their other group members. This
online chat feature allows for the group to have discussions on
the web page.
4. Stencils are used for different types of diagrams. These already
planned out stencils allows for younger students to possibly work
with the site.
Challenges:
1. The website could be challenging for students who lack
knowledge of the Internet. There are many buttons on the tool
bar that could take some time getting used to. This also limits the
complexity and age of the user. Students in first or second grade
may find this site very challenging to work with.
2. The amount of sheets for unpaid subscribers, some of the
different templates and stencils cost extra money, which could be
a downfall for the teacher when creating lesson plans.
3. This website has many options which students may need longer
to work on the assignment. Collaboration would be challenging if
the assignment needed to be done within a certain amount of
time.

Scribblar
www.scribblar.com
Scribblar is a Web 2.0 tool that is simple to work with. This tool allows
you to create a room in which you can collaborate with others. To get
started you must create a log in using an email. From here, you can send
out the room link to allow others to join and begin working with you.
There are many unique features such as snapshots, equation editor, and
highlighters to help make your project a success. There is a chat room to
the right of the screen that allows all of the users to collaborate. Within
the chat room is a place where you can click Raise Hand, to make sure
others are aware of when you have something to add- this helps with
collaboration.
4.1 Math: The group of students can work with the function equation
generator to place the greater than, equal to, or less than signs to make
correct statements.
VS.2 History: The group of students will work together to locate and
describe the regions of Virginias Coastal Plain. The students will
collaborate on how to design this project. Each group will have to use the
different buttons on the screen to draw and label the correct areas.
3.6 Geography: The students in each group will construct maps and

tables. The different shapes on the right hand side with the tool bar will
allow for different symbols for the map key. The students will collaborate
on the setting and ideas for their maps.*
Positives1. It is simple and easy to get started.
2. Scribblar gives you the option to make the rooms private with a
password so the
students dont feel as if their work
is getting displayed to the public.
3. You can upload images and other word documents onto the work
page.
4. There is a math function equation creator so that more difficult
math problems can still be written out.
Challenges1. It has a lot going on- there is a lot of buttons and different
features to work with that would take previous technology
information or time to adjust to.
2. The teacher would have to teach the site to the class one day in
order for them to work on it and possibly a separate day to
experiment with the site to fully function.
3. Invite has to be through email. This could be challenging if a
student does not have an email.
