(10 minutes) Introduce the Essay Assignment

o Today Im going to be introducing a new essay topic. Its going to
ask you to reflect on how you construct your identity using
various elements of your personality, social skills, and
competencies. In order to best explain the assignment, I need to
teach you a little something about psychology and this concept
of multiple domains.

Psychology teaches us that it is better to have a well

rounded identity with many different facets you find
important and identify with as part of your self concept.
These are the multiple domains.
Lets say you consider yourself to be an okay student, a
mediocre break dancer, an amazing rapper, and a good
cook, for example. If most of your self concept comes from
the way in which you perform as a musician (meaning you
overly identify with being a musician,) your self-esteem
becomes overly dependent on how you perform in this
single domain.
A failure or setback such as failing to get signed or
blowing an audition ends up being devastating.
If you identify more with multiple domains, meanwhile,
you tend to be more stable. If you consider more domains
important, like being a student, long distance runner,
brother, and so forth, setbacks will not affect you as
heavily and you will be more resilient.
Through the stability multiple domains bring you, it
becomes easier to predict how you will feel from day
to day because a stable self-esteem means that a
persons self image doesnt fluctuate or rely as
heavily on everyday pleasures and pains, setbacks,
and successes.

(5 minutes) Introduce Essay Question:

o Pass out Essay Prompt and Brainstorming Worksheets
o So, with this information in mind, please take a minute to
brainstorm some ideas and then write a response to this essay
question:
Which aspects of your identity are most important to you
and your self-concept? Which are less important? How do
or can you define yourself in terms of multiple domains?
How do or can these aspects of your identity help you in
your life? You may answer this question on a broader level,
or you may look at specific aspects of your identity and
write about how they can help you in life.

(10 minutes) PowerPoint On Multiple Domains (to help student

visualize the concept and follow along with the introduction to the
Essay Assignment)
o Multiple Domains: identifying with various aspects of yourself
that you find important
Ex: You can be an okay student, a mediocre break dancer,
an amazing rapper, and a good cook

If you choose only to identify with being an amazing

rapper, then maybe if you dont end up getting
signed youll get really depressed
o Less likely to get depressed if you dont only
identify as a rapper
You could be like yeah maybe I didnt
get it this time, but Im still going go
home and cook an amazing meal. Im
going to practice some break dancing to
get my mind off of it, and then Im going
get back to it and do some rapping for
next time. / I know Im awesome and Im
going pull a Chance the Rapper and do
my own thing without a record label.
Ask students:
o How does this example
reflect the use of multiple
domains? What are some
benefits of implementing
multiple domains? Who has
another example of using
multiple domains?
o My example: I identify
heavily as a writer, and have
often submitted my work for
things such as Young Authors
competitions, poetry
publications, and even
entered a Poetry Club in my
high school. Although
sometimes I was selected
and did win awards, I was
really excited to be joining
my high schools Louder
Than A Bomb competitive
team. I ended up being a
finalist, but was ultimately
not chosen to be a part of the
group. I was instead chosen
as an alternate. This could
have affected my self-esteem
a lot and made me lose
confidence in my ability to
write, but it didnt phase me
the same way that it could

have were I not confident in

multiple domains.
This is because I didnt
only identify as a
writer, but also as a
reliable friend, an
artist, a fair cook, a
great daughter and a
good student. Having a
stable self-concept
allowed me to happily
fulfill my role as an
alternate and continue
writing for our schools
club. I was able to
apply other aspects of
my personality, social
skills, and
competencies at the
same time and never
really let this failure
get me down or affect
my self-esteem. I still
write poetry today.
Summary: Multiple Domains =
stable self concept = higher self
esteem = happier, stable, resilient
version of yourself

(35 minutes) Allow students time to write

o Im going to give you some time now to write. You can grab your
Chromebooks and begin your writing assignment. It may be
helpful to spend some time reflecting and brainstorming some of
your domains/aspects of your identity before diving right in.

Exploring Identity Through Multiple Domains

Today weve discussed the concept of multiple domains and
their significance. Recall that it is important not to overly identify
with any single domain/aspect of yourself. In this essay, explore
who you are, and which domains are important to you in order to
develop different aspects of yourself and secure a stable selfimage.
Which aspects of your identity are most important to you
and your self-concept? Which are less important? How do or can
you define yourself in terms of multiple domains? How do or can
these aspects of your identity help you in your life? You may
answer this question on a broader level, or you may look at
specific aspects of your identity and write about how they can
help you in life.
Essays should be written in Times New Roman, 12 point font, with one
inch margins. They should be at least two pages in length.
