Template for Abstract of Master Thesis with Times New Roman

Hantaro Senkai

Laboratory Name in 10-point

Key Words: English only, Up to five, Italic script, Times New Roman, Using 9pt font

1. Introduction
This template describes the formatting guidelines for the
abstract of the master thesis to be written in English, which is
prepared for promoting uniformity of appearance. As shown in
this output sample, you are supposed to write the abstract in two
columns, except for the header part that includes the title of
thesis, names of author and laboratory, and key words. By
conforming to the specs of this template, your abstract will
reflect the look of this document. The left and right margins,
center gutter, and print area are automatically set to desired
length, and thus these should not be changed.
The abstract is a sort of contracted version of the thesis. Thus
basically the abstract begins with the Introduction, which may
state the background and objective(s) of the paper in a compact
form. Following the Introduction, the thesis should be organized
into logical parts or sections that describe the problem, the means
of solution, technical data and other information necessary to
quantify properly the results presented and conclusions drawn. If
needed, References follow the Conclusions.
Since the space allowed is just one page of A4 paper, you need
to elaborate on stressing the points of the thesis; that is, what are
important and new in order for readers to have a clear view
before your presentation.

2. Formatting
2.1 Header part
The paper title written with Times New Roman, bold-faced in
14-point font, in upper and lower cases should be centered at the
location shown. Since these are written in the header area of MS
Word file, just double click to overwrite this part.
2.2 Chapter and section titles
The title of chapter must be flush left, with serial number
followed by dot (.) and the title with bold-face in 10 point of
Times New Roman. The first letter of words in the chapter title
must be in upper case (capital letter). Article like the or a is not
capitalized.
The font size for the body of text must be 9 point and the
separation distance between adjacent lines is set to 11 point.
Please do not change these settings.
The section may be used. If so, its title must also be flush left,
starting with serial number (but no dot at the end of section
number, as shown above), and should be bold-faced and 9-point
font. Only the first letter of the title should be in upper case. Just
before the section title, this template is set to insert 20% of the
line spacing, which will be automatically set if you will copy and
paste the whole line of the section title or just overwrite it.

dot (.) should be put at the end of caption. The line spacing in the
caption of figure (and also table) should be 10 pt for good
appearance. An example is shown in Fig. 1.

Fig. 1 Coordinate system and definition of 6 degree of

freedom motions. The caption must be written in
English.
Equations are to be numbered consecutively as well. The
equation number should be written with parentheses, and when
writing an equation in a new line, the equation number should be
placed flush right with right-hand margin of the column.
Equation itself should be centered. An example is shown below.
N

n i

f (rij )
j 0

(1)
The font size for equations must be identical to that for the
text; that is, 9 point. When including equations with superscript
or subscript in text line, the separation distance between lines
may change automatically. However, this makes appearance
worse, and you can avoid it by fixing the separation distance as
specified (11pt in this template).

4. Where and by When to be Submitted

The hardcopy of the abstract of your thesis must be submitted
to the secretariat of the Department of Naval Architecture &
Ocean Engineering, by 16:30 of February 10 (Friday), 2017. You
can use colored diagrams, if necessary.

5. Conclusions
A brief summary of your research results may be included as
conclusions, in which you should write in a clear and convincing
way what was studied and what was newly found.
Normally there must be a number of items to be mentioned. If
this is the case, plural form of Conclusions (not Conclusion)
must be used. An example of citing references 1) 2) is shown here.

3. Figures, Tables and Equations

References

When figure(s) will be inserted, keep sufficient space above

the figure. Number figures consecutively and use figure number
when referring to the figure (Fig. 1). Figures must have a caption
consisting of an abbreviated number, like Fig. 1, and a brief title
should be placed below the figure, centered, in 9-point font. (For
the case of tables, the caption should be placed above the table.)
If the caption is long and extends to plural lines, the caption
part (excluding the figure number part) should be flush left, and
