The Hudson County Democratic Committee is investigating the county election superintendent and
allegations that he was responsible for compiling a challenge list that denied thousands their voting
rights, the County Executive said today.
The County Executive, Robert Janiszewski, said the committee and its lawyers will gather information
over the next few days from the superintendent's office and ask a Superior Court judge to appoint a
special panel to investigate. The county election superintendent is Harvey L. Brine.
Mr. Janiszewski said thousands had their voting rights interfered with when they were unnecessarily
put on the challenge list by Mr. Brine. Mr. Brine was not in his office and did not return telephone
messages. Mr. Janiszewski said many people on the lists were registered Democrats from heavily
minority districts.
