Maps Day 2
Objectives:
- The students will be able to locate Michigan on several different maps.
- The students will be able to write and draw a picture of some of the main attractions in
Grand Rapids.
Standards:
- 2 G2.0.2 Describe how the local community is part of a larger region (e.g., county,
metropolitan area, state).
Assessment:
- Formative: I will take note of the students responses during our discussion to see if they
understood the idea of using different maps to show how each community is a part of a
larger region.
- Summative: I will look at the students flipbooks that they have completed to see if they
understood the idea of different maps show how each community is a part of a larger
region.
Materials:
- Crayons/Colored Pencils
- Map Handouts
- Flipbooks
- Pencil

Motivation:
1. Last Friday, we learned about the continents.
a. How many continents are there?
i. Do you remember the names of them?
b. How many oceans are there?
i. Do you remember the names of them?
2. Show the flip book. Last time we worked on the map of the world. We:
a. Colored the continents a different color.
b. Labeled the oceans if you wanted.
c. Glued the strip that says North America is a continent of the world.
d. Colored Michigan a different color than the rest.

Development:
1. Now, we are going to flip the next page down. We are ZOOMING IN.
a. The United States is located in North America
b. Color the countries a different color.
c. COLOR MICHIGAN THE SAME COLOR AS THE OTHER MAP.
d. We live in the United States. It is a country which is inside of the continent of
North America.
e. Canada is in North America as well as Mexico and Greenland.
2. ZOOM IN AGAIN!
a. Michigan is in the United States
b. Michigan is a state in the United States.
c. COLOR MICHIGAN THE SAME COLOR AS THE OTHER MAPS.
3. ZOOM IN AGAIN!
a. Grand Rapids is a city in Michigan
b. Show map of Michigan. We live in Michigan. COLOR MICHIGAN THE
SAME COLOR AS THE OTHER MAPS.
i. Where is the capital? How do you know? (Put a star on Lansing).
ii. Where do we live? Draw a dot & write Grand Rapids where it is.
4. ZOOM IN AGAIN!
a. I live in Grand Rapids
b. What do we have in Grand Rapids? What are some of the main attractions
or places to go? (Frederik Meyer Gardens, Childrens Museum, John Ball Zoo).
c. Write one or two places that you like to go, and draw a picture by it.
5. ZOOM IN AGAIN!
a. I live in Grand Rapids
b. Draw a picture of yourself doing something you love.
Closure:
1. When students are done working on their projects, bring everyone to the carpet, and
have them share what they chose to write in Grand Rapids, and what they drew
themselves doing in the this is me picture.
REFLECTION:
This lesson went well. The students seemed to understand the idea of continually zooming in to
see different parts of the world on different maps. However, it was hard to teach because the
students were all going at a different pace, so I ended up taking smaller groups of students who
were read for the next step instead of teaching everyone at the same time. This made for a hectic
lesson because the students were all finishing at different times, and were all coming to me to say
they were ready for the next step, but they were at different steps. I dont know if there would be
a better way to teach this lesson because of the makeup of my class, but it seemed like this was
the most logical way because my lower students were far behind my higher students. I think I
could have given the higher students directions for two steps and they would have been able to
complete two in a row without me explaining one by one, and that would have made my lesson a
little less hectic.
