Student Code of Conduct

The Storm Mountain instructional staff operates by a code of conduct which we use as
a benchmark to gauge our efforts. Similarly, we ask our students to adhere to the
Storm Mountain Student Code of Conduct. It is very straightforward, containing only 2
elements, and is relatively easy to achieve.
1. Obey the Four Universal Firearms Safety Rules
a. ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
b. NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT
WILLING TO DESTROY
c. KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOU HAVE MADE
THE DECISION TO FIRE
d. BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND
2. Be respectful of your fellow students, the staff and the facility.
Being respectful of your fellow students, the staff and the facility is selfexplanatory. Regardless, here are some examples:

Please drive slowly for everyones safety speed limit on the property is 10
m.p.h.
If you are a smoker, please use the butt receptacles.
Chew Tobacco is only to be used OUTDOORS and with a sealable spit
container.
Please put your cell phone on vibrate or silent during classroom lectures and
do not use them during class.
For everyones safety, drugs and alcohol are a disqualifier.
To keep the facility clean, please throw away your trash, whether on the
range or in the classroom.

Arrival and Departure

On the first day of your course, arrive promptly by 8:30 a.m. PLEASE DO NOT BE
LATE. CLASSES WILL BEGIN AT 9:00 A.M. UNLESS OTHERWISE INSTRUCTED.

OR PRIVATE INSTRUCTION RESERVATIONS. ALL MONIES APPLIED TO
THESE COURSES WILL BE FORFEIT UPON CANCELLATION.)
Storm Mountain Training Center reserves the right to cancel any course with a full

Dress:
Eye and hearing protection is required for all students of firearms courses, along with a
hat with a brim, such as a baseball cap. Comfortable attire is recommended. It is
suggested that students bring clothing suitable for adverse weather conditions for use
on the shooting ranges. For tactical classes, it is recommended that students bring all
the gear that they would normally carry (police and military personnel). It is extremely
important to train with the same weapons and equipment with which you will be
deployed.
Storm Mountain mandates that all students and staff wear electronic hearing protection.
Standard ear muffs or foam ear plugs are not sufficient. Electronic hearing protection
amplifies voices and ambient sounds so they are easily heard. When shots are fired,
the electronic circuitry shuts out the gunfire. The ability to clearly hear the range
commands helps ensure safety and promotes maximum learning. Electronic hearing
protection can be purchased at all sporting goods stores and gun shops. (**please also
see the section on Equipment for further requirements.)

Lunch:
Students will be given a 1 to 2 hour lunch break daily. It is MANDATORY that students
bring lunch with them for the day. You will not have time to travel off of Storm Mountain
property during your lunch breaks. Storm Mountain provides a refrigerator, microwave
and toaster oven in each classroom for student use. Subway and Sheetz (S. Mineral
St. Keyser) offers a variety of sandwiches and salads made fresh to order 24 hours a
day. There is a full service deli and bakery in the Wal-Mart and Martins Food Markets.
Both are open 24 hours. It is also recommended to bring PLENTY TO DRINK, as
proper hydration is essential to optimum performance in the classroom and in the field
of training. (**please see our section on Proper Hydration located in this packet)

Equipment, Firearms and Ammunition

Students must provide their own weapons. Any questions regarding this policy can be
directed to our office, (304) 446-5526. AMMUNITION IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE
COST OF TUITION. Each class description includes the MINIMUM amount of
ammunition needed.

Equipment:
Storm Mountain strongly recommends complying with all Federal, State, Country and
City Laws regarding transportation of weapons and ammunition. Each student is
required to bring a legally-owned weapon in safe operating condition. A spare weapon
is highly recommended in the event that your primary weapon breaks during the
course. It is not uncommon during the course of four days of training to have 15% of
the weapons fail to function for a variety of reasons. These failures often require
replacement parts and a competent gunsmith to correct the problems; therefore it is
best to be prepared with a backup weapon. At this time, Storm Mountain DOES NOT
provide gun-smithing services. Each student must wear wrap around eye protection
while on or near the firing range and tactical training simulators. Most prescription
glasses are not sufficient. Your safety glasses must be wrap around and impact
resistant. Electronic hearing protection is mandatory. A hat and sunscreen are strongly
recommended. Knee and elbow pads are recommended for all long gun (shotgun, rifle,
submachine gun, M-16, etc.) courses and advanced handgun courses. Slings are also
mandatory for long guns. A flashlight (Sure Fire or similar model with pressure on/off
button) is required for all courses which have a night shoot. A notepad and pen are
recommended for the classroom lectures.

Handguns, Holsters and Gear:

No Pocket Pistols are allowed. No single action revolvers are allowed. Handguns
must be full sized weapons chambered in 9mm/.38 caliber or larger with the trigger
guard intact. The holster must secure the weapon, cover the trigger guard and be worn
on a waist belt. WE DO NOT ALLOW THE BLACKHAWK SERPA HOLSTER OR ANY
HOLSTER OF SIMILAR DESIGN WITH A TRIGGER GUARD RETENTION DEVICE.
This holster is equipped with a retention device in the trigger guard which, if used
improperly, can result in a negligent discharge. Retention devices such as top straps
and thumb breaks are not required. Inside the belt and open top holsters are fine as
long as the weapon is held securely with the shooter is running and moving. Your
holster should NOT collapse when the weapon is removed, especially if it is an inside
the waistband type holster. At a minimum, two spare magazines for auto loading
pistols with magazine holders worn on the waist belt or two speed loaders for revolvers
with appropriate holders are required.
Shotguns:
Shotguns must be pump action or auto loading in 12, 16 or 20 gauge with trigger guard
intact and have an attached sling. All shotguns must have a full stock, not merely a
pistol grip stock. An ammunition carrier or pouch is recommended. Large vest pockets
or trouser cargo pockets will suffice. Knee and elbow pads are recommended.
Attached (dedicated) flashlights are mandatory for specialized advanced level courses.
Rifles:
Rifles must be bolt action, pump action, lever action or auto loading in .223 caliber or
larger, have an attached sling, and a trigger pull weight of at least two pounds.
Ammunition and magazine pouches are recommended. Large vest pockets or trouser
cargo pockets will suffice. Knee and elbow pads are recommended. Attached
(dedicated) flashlights are mandatory for specialized advanced level courses. NO
MAGNUMS!!
Approved Ammunition:
Due to the potential liability and hazards of using reloaded or remanufactured
ammunition, all ammunition used at Storm Mountain must be new, factory made
ammunition. We require the use of jacketed bullets. The bullet design may be full
metal jacket (FMJ), total metal jacket (TMJ), jacketed soft point, or jacketed hollow
point. Shotgun ammunition must be lead; no steel shot. (Birdshot should be lead #8 or
#7 shot.)

Prohibited Ammunition:
DO NOT BRING THE FOLLOWING TYPES OF AMMUNITION OR BULLETS:
- Steel jacketed bullets (Test your ammunition with a magnet before arriving!)
- Steel or Aluminum cased ammunition such as Wolf, Bear or CCi.
- Lead bullets with no jacket (except for use in revolvers)
- Lead bullets with a thin copper wash, such as American Ammunition (not to be
confused with American Eagle Ammunition made by Federal Cartridge Company)
- Armor piercing, tracers or other incendiary ammunition.
- Steel shot or 3 shells for shotguns.

General Questions and Answers

Q: How do I transport my firearms on a commercial airliner?
It is very simple. Bring your firearms to the airline ticket counter, unloaded with actions
open INSIDE your locked luggage. Handguns must be in a locked hard case. The
hard case may either be the luggage itself (such as a Samsonite suitcase) or a
handgun case inside of your soft luggage (such as a duffle bag). Either way, the case
containing the handgun must be locked. Long guns (rifle and shotguns) are transported
in a hard rifle case with lock. Pelican makes an excellent product that allows a standard
padlock to be applied. When you arrive at the ticket counter, tell the agent you want to
declare an unloaded firearm. All airlines are a bit different in the form they have you fill
out, but most likely will ask you to open the case and show them that the weapon is
unloaded. They will then place a copy of the declaration in your case with the firearm
and staple another copy to your ticket jacket. You then lock the case and they will place
it on the baggage carrier to be transported to the aircraft. No tag is placed on the
outside of the luggage. This was done in the pas and encouraged theft. Airlines have
since abandoned this practice. When you arrive at your destination, proceed to the
Baggage Claim area. Your luggage will arrive with all other passenger luggage on the
luggage carousel.

Q: What about transporting ammunition?

Transportation of ammunition is allowed by the airlines. However, they have weight and
quantity limitations. Each airline sets different limits. Contact your airline to confirm any
limitations. We suggest that you contact them at least twice to confirm you are told the
same information. **YOU MAY ALSO SHIP YOUR AMMO DIRECTLY TO SMTC FOR
STORAGE UNTIL YOUR COURSE DATE.
Q: Where do I store my firearms?
Storm Mountain recommends that you keep your firearms in your possession at all
times. When transporting weapons in your vehicle, keep firearms unloaded in an
inconspicuous case and locked in your trunk. Similarly, keep firearms unloaded and in
an inconspicuous case when transporting from your vehicle to your room. DO NOT
DISPLAY YOUR FIREARMS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. USE PROPER
DISCRETION AND COMMON SENE AT ALL TIMES WHEN TRANSPORTING
FIREARMS AND AMMUNITION. DO NOT LEAVE FIREARMS IN YOUR HOTEL
ROOM UNATTENDED.
Q: Can I ship my firearms to Storm Mountain?
Yes, however you must handle all return shipping.
Q: Is there transportation from the hotels to Storm Mountain?
Not at this time. We recommend you rent a car. The drive from Keyser, WV. (Hotels) is
approximately 15 minutes. The drive time from Deep Creek Lake, Maryland is
approximately 45 minutes.
Q: What should I wear for my firearms course?
All the firearms courses consist of indoor lecture and outdoor range activities. Dress
comfortably with clothes appropriate for the season. Check the weather forecast for
Keyser, WV. to determine the proper clothing. If rain is forecasted, bring a rain jacket.
Loose fitting pants are recommended, but shorts are also acceptable with appropriate
knee protection for courses involving braced shooting positions such as kneeling and
prone. Comfortable boots are recommended, but athletic shoes are acceptable. Long
sleeve shirts and or elbow pads are recommended for courses involving prone position
shooting. Sunscreen and a hat are recommended during all seasons.

Proper Hydration

Proper hydration cannot be accomplished by reacting to the body when it is thirsty.

Hydration must be accomplished in advance of exposure to heat and dryness. The
following is a protocol to assure proper hydration and electrolyte balance which is
essential for peak performance in summer months.
Begin hydrating the night before by drinking water regularly during the course of the
evening. Eight to ten ounces every half hour is adequate. A good measure is to check
your urine to monitor that the color remains clear.
Prior to reporting to the range, drink a quart of water. Half strength Gatorade (half water
half Gatorade) is better than just water. Eat a banana with your breakfast and refrain
from caffeine. Alcohol the night before and in the evenings after the course will
dehydrate you, so it is not advised.
During the day, drink water regularly between shooting relays and stay in the shade as
much as possible. If you begin to feel weak or dizzy or begin to get confused and notice
your coordination disappearing, this is the beginning of dehydration and possibly
heatstroke. Immediately seek shade and notify an instructor.
We give you this information in advance knowing that if you follow it you are much less
likely to have any problems with the heat. Do not take the attitude that since you are
accustomed to the heat you need not follow the strict protocol outlined above. Those
who have come before you can testify to dropping (literally) before the end of the course
because they did not follow these simple but effective procedures.
Note: Cardiovascular conditions, kidney dysfunction, and digestive disorders make it
more difficult for your body to maintain proper temperature, hydration and electrolyte
balance. Certain prescription medications such as antibiotics, Beta Blockers and blood
pressure medications can also reduce your tolerance to heat. If you have these
conditions or are taking these prescription medications, you require even closer
monitoring to prevent dehydration and heatstroke.
PLEASE ADVISE SMTC STAFF IF YOU ARE TAKING PRESCRIPTION DRUGS OR
HAVE ALLERGIES (MEDICATIONS, INSECTS, ETC.)
