Understanding Types . . . is an introduction to 15 different genres with 2 examples each.

After reading the document and looking at the list, Ive learned a lot. It was surprising to read
about amount of different types of genres. Before reading, I couldnt really name 15 genres off the
top of my head. Some of the genres that were listed, I didnt think to associate them with types of
genres (ex. cereal boxes, emails etc). It was also interesting to read that even professional writers
and experts use models too. Im one of those students who cannot really start a writing project
without seeing an example or model of it done correctly first.
Personal Essays. READ it along with the 2 examples. What is advantageous of the Personal
Essay? What are some of the "ELEMENTS" that make a personal essay?
One element of a Personal Essay is narrative. An advantage of a Personal Essay is that its narrative
genre is known as a very important way to learn about ourselves, each other and other priorities of
academic communities. The author is able to share his/her personal experiences, insights and
interpretations with others. The audience is able to relate/respond to the writing to their own personal
experiences. This can be therapeutic for both the writer and audience. Another element would be the
informal tone the author uses. This makes it easy for the reader to relate.

Journals: READ it along with the 2 examples. Why do we journal? What are some of the
"ELEMENTS" of a journal? As a genre, the journal entry is particularly useful for responding to the
readings in a course. How would you - Respond to READING RESPONSE #1 as a journal?
Journaling is a way to write informally and free. There are not many rules and guidelines that the
author has to follow when writing a journal. Element of a journals would be how they are opinionated
and shorter than other writing genres.
