Congress of the United States
Washington, AC 20515
December 9, 2016
Mr. Brian L., Roberts
Chairman and CEO, Comeast Corporation
Comeast Center
1701 JFK Boulevard
Philadelphia, PA 19103
Dear Mr. Roberts:
We are contacting you with regard to the pending launch of Comeast Corporation's new NBC
Boston area station, with specific concern for whether residents in the Designated Boston Market
Area will continue to have reliable access to free, over-the-air coverage of NBC broadcasts.
Recent reports indicate that the station will broadcast from southern New Hampshire beginning
January 1, 2017 and will use a low-power station to relay the signal to the Boston area. This
signal arrangement could potentially prohibit many of our constituents and residents across the
entire Commonwealth of Massachusetts from receiving the broadcast, thereby limiting their
access to certain national and local programming. As you are well aware, limited finances force
many consumers to abandon pay-TV subscriptions and rely solely on over the air broadcasts for
their news and entertainment viewing.
On its face, we believe this signal arrangement will have a severe negative impact on the most
vulnerable in our population, We would like to know whether you anticipate that consumers will
be adversely affected and, if'so, what measures have been or will be adopted to correct the
situation?
Many of us in Congress had serious reservations about the 2011 acquisition of NBC by Comcast
and its potential negative impact on access to programming and cost for the consumer. It is our
hope that on the matter of the Comeast NBC Boston area broadcast, you will make every effort
to rectify these concerns.
Sincerely,
STEPHEN F. LYNCH SEPH P. ne m
