Word Work (Phonics)
Promote the strategy of working with words
to let the students comprehend.
Be able to write a letter.
Be able to practice spelling out words with
writing the letter.
When Summer Comes By Robert Maass

-Letter sheet

Assessment:

After the reading, ask the students what


they would like to do when summer comes.
Ask them to write a letter to each other for
they will not see each other during the
summer.
Assess writing skill by their letters.
Ask the students to read out their letters
aloud.

Activities [Brief Outline]:

1. Before reading: Ask students what they have


done last summer. (After their kindergarten
year. Ex: What have you done during
summer? Did you go swimming? Did you
go somewhere?)
2. Teacher will introduce the book to them by
reading out the title and the author.
3. Teacher asks one of the students what the
title of the book is?
4. Teacher talks and asks about the picture in
the cover of the book. (Ex: Where is the
setting in the cover of the book?)
5. During reading: Ask them in between the
book if they understand the words and
meaning of the text.
6. Let the students reflect on each page of the
book by pausing for a few seconds.
7. After reading: Ask the students what their
favorite part of the book was. Also ask them
if they have done any of the events that were
in the book.
8. Ask the students to reread the book aloud.
Then do the Spelling test activity. Read

other about how they will spend the
upcoming summer.
10. Assessment: Spelling test and letter writing
will show their vocabulary knowledge
