Module Lesson Three: Return to Learn

Lesson Three: Return to Learn is the third of six lessons in the online module.

Terminal Objective: Given a list of concussion symptoms and symptoms, the learner will
create (write) a potential academic plan consisting of at least 4 accommodations.

Enabling Objectives:
1. Given a list of signs and symptoms, choose 5 of these signs or symptoms and predict
how an academic environment may exacerbate these signs or symptoms.
2. Explain the rationale behind the creation of return-to-learn protocol following a
concussion.
3. Identify 3 individuals who may be involved in the return-to-learn protocol and state
their roles.

The content in Lesson Three is provided via a podcast, video, and reading. After completing
these passive activities as well as the Do activity, the learner will be required to complete a
Connect activity. Horton (2011) states that, Connect activities help learners close the gap
between learning and the rest of their lives. They prepare learners to apply learning in
situations they encounter at work, in later learning efforts, and in their personal lives. In this
Connect activity, learners will be asked to create a concussion contact list that identifies
individuals involved in the concussion treatment process as well as their contact information.

In this lesson, you have reviewed the Return to Learn process following a concussion.
Prior to beginning, you should have asked yourself the following questions:
If my child woke up following a head injury complaining of symptoms, would I let
him/her go to school?
What potential modifications could be made for a student with a concussion?
Who are the members of the concussion management team?

There is no one size fits all approach to returning to learn. Restrictions and
accommodations must be tailored to the individual. Remember that concussion recovery is
both physical and cognitive. Before beginning the Return to Physical Activity, a
concussed individual needs to have succeeded in completing a full Return to Learn.

After completing the readings and Activity #1, create a concussion management team
reference guide that will be utilized in the event that your son or daughter sustains a
concussion. Fill in the table below, and identify the roles of each individual. You may need
to do some additional research on the Internet, or contact your family physician. Please
upload this reference guide in the area provided. Print this information and bring it with
you for the classroom portion discussion.
