North Carolina Rapid Intervention School


The North Carolina Rapid Intervention School
is designed to expose the student to a highly
trained skill set including the following:
Mayday
Safety & Survival
Rapid Intervention Crew Certification Course
(Meets NFPA 1407 Standard for Training
Fire Service Rapid Intervention Crews)

Mayday

The Mayday class will educate students on


topics such as recognizing the mayday scenario,
proper procedures for calling a mayday, and how
to control radio traffic during a mayday scenario.

Safety & Survival

The Safety & Survival class will educate


students through skill techniques to successfully
self-extricate during a firefighter emergency.
These skill sets will include rigorous training
in breaching and breaking barriers; low profile
maneuvers; extrication from debris; extrication
from entanglement; and emergency bailout
procedures including ladder, rope, and hose
slides.

Rapid Intervention
Crew Certification Course

Held within the new Firefighter program are


two of three modules that will make up the
NCRIC program. Self-Survival and Mayday
will join together with the RIC course to form
a three tiered program that will focus on the
development of risk assessment and risk
management, communication procedures,
personnel accountability and resource
management, RIC deployment criteria,
activation and management of rapid intervention
operations with the main focus of the course
structured to reduce the risk to RIC members
and maximize the potential of rescuing a

downed firefighter. Students will have a thorough


understanding of search techniques, victim access
and extrication, air supply/management techniques,
methods for protecting firefighters in place, methods
for moving downed firefighters, and firefighter selfrescue techniques.
NOTE: This will be a physically demanding school.
Students attending should be in good physical
shape with the ability to train for long periods of
time. Lunch will be provided each day.

Pre-requisites: Firefighter Certification


Needed Equipment

Each participant must furnish their own set of


protective equipment including turnout gear; selfcontained breathing apparatus; and a spare bottle.
Air bottles must be marked for easy identification.

Class size is limited. Register early!
