PREFACE.
The-wordsandexpressionsofordinaryconversation
arenotsuchasareusedinparticularpursuits; and
the words andexpressionsof one professionare
hardly understoodby those engagedin another.
Eachcallingadoptsitsownpeculiarmodeandmeans
of conveyingthe idea of its requirements. The
nautical phraseology,in particular, has so many
peculiar,originalandcharacteristic phraseswhich
arewhollyincomprehensibletolandsmengenerally,
thatthecasualtranslatorofnavaldocuments,though,
inameasure,possessedofthelanguageshemaybe
transposing,finds himselffrequently at a loss to
understandand properly interprettheexpressions
hemeets.
TheEditor,inhisintercoursewithseafaringmen,
hasfelttheseriousinconvenienceofhavingnobook
ordictionary,ofeasyreference,givingthepeculiar
meaningsoftheexpressionsandwordsusedbythem.
Havingfeltthis wanthimself,hebelieveshehas
rendereda serviceto theSpanishMarine,andto
