Oobleck Lab

(Warning!! This lab has the potential to get very messy. Do not do anything that
is inappropriate for a lab. If you choose to do so, you will no longer get to
participate in the lab)
Background:
Our world is made up of matter. Everything that we can touch is matter. That means the
water we drink, the pencil we write with, the air we breath are all examples of matter.
Even you and I are examples of matter! An important part of matter is that it can exist as
either a solid, liquid or a gas. This is called the state of matter. Think of water as an
example: It can either be a solid like an ice cube, liquid like the water we drink, or as a
gas like when water is boiling. Lots of different things tell us what the state of matter is.
Today we will examine some of these as we try to determine what the state of matter is
of oobleck!
Question: Is Oobleck a liquid or a solid?
Hypothesis: If we mix cornstarch and water, then the state of matter will be..
Procedure:
1. Get a bag of Oobleck from your teacher. Do not open the bag until told to do so.
2. Complete the directions listened in the results table, going through each step
one-by-one. While completing the experiment you dont have to write down the
3. Fill in the data table after you have cleaned up.

Pour some Oobleck into your
hands and roll it into a ball
Make an Oobleck snake and pull it

Conclusion:
Describe the characteristics of oobleck which make it like a liquid.

Describe the characteristics of oobleck which make it like a solid?

Does your results support your hypothesis? Remember that your conclusion should also include
a claim and evidence. For example: Oobleck is a (Solid/Liquid/Gas) because...
