America & WW II Theatre

When did the United States join World War 2 ?

Although the war began with Nazi Germany's attack on Poland in September 1939, the
United States did not enter the war until after the Japanese bombed the American fleet in
Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941.
Why USA go to World War 2 ?
The United States joined World War II as a response to the bombing of Pearl Harbor in
Hawaii by the Japanese on Dec. 7, 1941. The country had been keeping itself isolated from
the global war; however, after the attack, the country declared war on Japan on Dec. 8, 1941.
How was the United States involved in World War 2 ?
Japan`s plans for expansion in the Far East led it to attack Pearl Harbor in December 1941,
bringing the United States into the war. By early 1942, all major countries of the world were
involved in the most destructive war in history.
Why did the United States become involved in World War 2 ?
Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. This prompted the United States to
officially enter the war. Italy and Germany quickly declared war on the U.S.
History :
When war broke out in Europe, US President Franklin Roosevelt recognised that
the conflict threatened US security, and looked for ways to help the European
democracies without direct involvement in the war.
After the bombing of the US Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor in December 1941, only
one congressman opposed the declaration of war; the vote in the senate was
unanimous. Hitlers declaration of war on the US, which came four days later,
was actually a blessing in disguise for Roosevelt.
Germany and Italy, who had a pact with Japan, declared war on the United States
three days later on December 11. This meant the U.S. forces had to fight on two
fronts: one in the Pacific and one in Europe.
More than 50 countries took part in the war, and the whole world felt its effects.
Men fought in almost every part of the world.
The following day, America and Great Britain declared war on Japan.
On December 10, Germany and Italy declared war on the U.S.

American Reaction Before WW-II :

United States Gain Global Power :

The U.S. joined World War II with what they had, and came out with Global
Power. When the war began, President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the
Neutrality Acts which kept the U.S. out of war. The country suffered
enough from World War I and was not yet ready for another war. It wasn't
until the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor that the U.S. joined the Allies.
By 1940 American's began to prepare for war. Many thought they had no
other choice.
By that time, the Allies had very little cash to purchase anything from the
United States.
Roosevelt told them, "We must be the great arsenal of democracy." While
the Allies fought off Germany and Italy, another nation joined the Axis
Powers, Japan.
The Japanese began to expand by invading Southeast Asia.
The U.S. tried to stop Japans aggression by stopping sales of oil and scrap
metal to them.
The Japanese were angered because they desperately needed these
resources.
The nation was shocked and this caused President Roosevelt to declare
war on Japan.
But in 1945, after winning a fourth term as President, Roosevelt died
leaving Vice President Harry S.
Truman to take over in mid stream.
In late July of 1945, the United States became the most powerful force in
the war.
While in a meeting with the Soviet Union, Truman received news that
scientist had completed the first atomic bomb.
On August 6th, one bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, killing about
seventy thousand civillians.
Still the Japanese did not surrender. On August 9th, a second bomb was
dropped on Nagasaki leading to the defeat of the Axis Powers.
All across the United States,s Americans celebrated the end of the war.

American Reaction During WW-II :

Following the attacks, the U.S. military needed to mobilize quickly.

Although President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Congress had implemented a
draft in 1940, the draft was extended to all men ages 18 to 64 by 1942.
During the war over 36 million men registered, giving the local draft
boards an extremely large pool from which to work.

Industries within the country began to prepare for war by increasing

production for military needs and decreasing production for non-military
needs.
When the war began, the United States had entered a period of isolationism.
While the United States was suffering through the economic meltdown of the Great
Depression.
Roosevelt had two opportunities to involve America in World War II: Japan was at war with
China, and Germany was at war with Great Britain, France and other countries. Both war
zones presented plenty of opportunities to involve the American government in the war.
Americans Feared From USSR :
The United States cautioned Japan against further aggressive actions by threatening to cut off
shipments of raw materials to the nation.
Although the United States distrusted the USSR because of the recent communist takeover.
Tripartite Pact :
In the fall of 1940, Japan met with Nazi Germany, They made alliance against USA and Italy
was also joined with Germany and Japan, alliance known as the Tripartite Pact. Under this
agreement, these three nations agreed to work with and support each other in their respective
countries efforts to create a new world order.
Land Lease Act Was Passed :
During the regime of Franklin D.Roose Velt ,The Lend-Lease Act was passed in 1941. This
act allowed the president to transfer defence materials to certain countries. These supplies
were transferred to China, Britain, the Soviet Union and other countries.

Notable Points :
Before the attack on Pearl Harbor, Americans were reluctant to get involved in
the war. Many political leaders believed the best approach would be to limit
America's involvement in foreign affairs.
For the second time in the 20th century, the United States became involved in a
devastating world conflict.
World War II was a terrible event that will be remembered as one of the darkest
chapters in human history and With estimates of the dead ranging from 60 to 80
million.
The party came to see the Treaty of Versailles, the agreement that ended World
War I, as responsible for the destruction of German pride and success.
The Treaty of Versailles had been predominantly constructed by the Allied
nations of the English, French, and the United States.

The date of September 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland, is remembered

as the date the war started. But little is remembered about the date Russia also
moved into Poland, on September 16,1939. The nation of Poland was now
divided between these two war-time allies.
Others did not believe Roosevelt's claim that America would remain neutral.
But Germany's war efforts were still dependent on oil resources, and it came
from a variety of sources, some external to the German border.

Purpose Of Japans Attack To Pear Harbour :

The purpose of this attack was to give Japan a territory rich in raw materials on
the mainland. The only problem was that Manchuria was already under the
control of China and was an area of strategic importance to the USSR.

Breakthrough During World War II : / Americans Economy Boom

America's response to World War II was the most extraordinary mobilization of

an idle economy in the history of the world.
During the war 17 million new civilian jobs were created, industrial productivity
increased by 96 percent, and corporate profits after taxes doubled.
From neutrality to Pearl Harbor, the United States was set for war, as millions of
men and women volunteered to serve their country. Many others stayed home,
not being able to do much.
They worked in war industries. Those who stayed and worked didn't build
refrigerators and cars they produced machine guns, tanks, aircrafts, and many
more supplies to win the war.
However this was a great opportunities for many people. This was a cause for the
growth of the economy.
The U.S entered World War II without access to the world's market, and without
military bases to enforce its will.

Positive After Effects Of WW-II In The World :

As depression took hold of the world, a new war began, World War II, the
worst war in American history. A big cause of the war was the rise of
dictators in the European countries.
There were many positive effects that came out of the war. New
opportunities were in store for the American women.
Opportunities emerged giving women the privilege to show what they
were capable of. In addition, the economy rose drastically. There was a
growth in economy due to the mass production of war material.

The president ended segregation giving many different races great new
benefits. Also, the United States became a world power. The atomic bomb
changed the way the United States was looked at by other nations.
