Hitting the ice for an experience of a lifetime

Flyers Skate Zone employee becomes Chicago Blackhawks backup goalie for a day
By JULIE SHANNON
The Sun
It was a usual Saturday morning for Eric Semborski on Dec. 3.
The Bloomsburg, Pa., native and
former Temple University ice
hockey goalie was coaching at the
Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees,
where he is the hockey programs
coordinator. Out of nowhere, people in the rink told him to call his
boss, Jay Friedman, who had
been trying to get in touch with
him.
I was walking to find him
(Friedman) when Barry Hanrahan (the Philadelphia Flyers assistant general manager) stopped
me and asked me where I played
hockey, the 23-year-old Semborski said. He typed all of this into
his phone and then said, oh,
Chicago (Blackhawks) needs a
backup (goalie) for today. I couldnt believe it when he said it.
Hanrahan continued to tell
Semborski he might have to go
home and grab his gear, and if
they decided to use him, he would
get a call from the Blackhawks in
about 10 minutes.
I left right away, and sure
enough, 20 minutes later, my
phone rang and it said Chicago on
it, he recalled.
The Philadelphia Flyers had a

home game that Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. versus the Chicago
Blackhawks. The Blackhawks
starting goalie, Corey Crawford,
underwent an emergency appen-

dectomy that morning, which

meant the backup goalie, Scott
Darling, would be the starter.
NHL teams are required to have a
backup goalie suited at all times,

and because they werent playing

in Chicago, they werent able to
recall a player from the minor
leagues. The Blackhawks started
to scramble and reached out to

the Flyers organization, which

eventually led to Semborski. He
signed an amateur tryout contract and just like that, he was an
NHL player for the day.
It was a little nerve-wracking
trying to get back to my apartment (in Manayunk) to get my
gear and get down to the (Wells
Fargo) Center, he said. I left
Voorhees at about 11 a.m., and I
ended up making it just in time to
get dressed and take warm-ups.
Semborski has been on the ice
at the Wells Fargo Center quite a
few times in the past, but never in
a situation remotely like this.
Coming out and seeing a
bunch of fans in the crowd, not
just empty seats, was great, he
recalled. You look up and see
Patrick Kane and Brent Seabrook
skating around, and I looked
down and I was wearing the same
jersey as them; it was crazy. I was
just trying to soak it all in and
keep up with them, which was the
hardest part.
With the Flyers up 3-1 toward
the end of the third period, Semborski almost had his NHL debut.
Once we pulled Darling for the
extra attacker, I kind of figured if
the Flyers get a goal here I might
go in, he said. I had that in the
back of my mind. That would

The Camden County Freeholder Board announced the launch of

Smart911 in Camden County to
save critical time in emergency
situations and encourages county
residents to register with the program. Smart911 is a free nationwide service that allows users to

create a Smart911 Safety Profile,

which provides vital information
to emergency dispatchers and
first responders during an emergency.
Our first responders need as
much intelligence as possible to
ensure positive outcomes, and
this program is a key to gathering
that strategic analysis to provide
help, said Camden County Freeholder Jonathan Young, liaison to
the Camden County Department
of Public Safety. By giving the
department of public safety your
home and work address, or even
photos, you can let first responders know exactly where to go
and who they are looking for.
When every second counts,
Smart911 can and will save lives.
Smart911 allows individuals to
create a safety profile at
www.camdencounty.com for their
household that can include any
additional information they want
the county communication center and first responders to have in
an emergency situation. When an

individual makes a 911 call, their

safety profile is automatically displayed to the dispatcher, allowing
them to send the most appropriate response to the exact location
with the right information.
With Smart911, residents can
link both home and work addresses to mobile phones, which can be
passed on to police and fire personnel in the field for more a detailed, rapid response. Additional
information, including current
medications, preexisting medical
conditions, vehicle details in the
event of an accident, emergency
contacts and much more can all
be included in a safety profile.
Residents who link their safety profiles to their cell phones
will provide first responders with
the vital information they need,
Young said. Even if you are in
an area with a weak cell signal or
a location where the call drops,
you will have the added assistance of having your safety proplease see SMART911, page 9

THE VOORHEES SUN DEC. 14-20, 2016

in our opinion

The future is bright for business

Survey respondents feel 2017 will be a good year for them
eres a piece of news you
might not have heard in
awhile in New Jersey: Small
business owners are excited about the
future.
The New Jersey Business and Industry Association recently released
its 58th annual Business Outlook Survey, and the overall forecast is quite
encouraging.
According to the survey, 29 percent
of business owners said they would increase employment in 2017, compared
to 9 percent that said they would decrease a strong net-positive of 20
percent, the associations president,
Michele Siekerka, said.
Of the 1,046 responses most of
whom were small business owners

Your thoughts
What are your thoughts on the state of
doing business and working in New Jersey,
and what role our new governor should
play? Share your thoughts through a letter to the editor.

61 percent said they would give wage

increases between 1 percent and 4.9
percent, and another 8 percent said
they would give wage increases above
that range.
The concerns among the small business owners arent shocking: They
worry about the cost of health care,
property taxes and the general cost of
doing business in New Jersey, along
with the potential bump to a $15 minimum wage.

Richard Donnelly

These are all topics that our new

governor whomever it may be will
have to attack head on.
Democratic Assemblyman John
Wisniewski and fellow Democrat Phil
Murphy have already announced they
will run for governor, as has Republican Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli.
Assembly Minority Leader Jon Bramnick and Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno, both
Republicans, are also expected to
throw their hats into the ring for the
states top governmental position.
Its just a shame he or she wont be
able to start the job until 2018, after
next years highly-anticipated gubernatorial election to replace our historically-disliked current governor, Chris
Christie.

Diversity makes the holidays a marvelous time

This time of year brings joy, happiness
and a focus on friends, family and sharing
special times. Our diverse community celebrates in various ways with long-standing
traditions.
Our Hindu community celebrated Diwali the end of October. Known as the festival of lights, Diwali commemorates the
return of Lord Rama from his 14 year-long
exile and the vanquishing of the demonking Ravana. In joyous celebration of the
return of their king, the people of Ajodhya, the Capital of Rama, illuminated the
kingdom with oil lamps and burst firecrackers. Diwali also marks the victory of
good over evil.
Hanukkah is celebrated for eight days
and nights and will begin on Dec. 25. The
word Hanukkah means dedication in
Hebrew. On each night of Hanukkah, the
menorah is lit to commemorate a miracle,
which occurred after the Jews proclaimed
victory over the Syrian Armies in 165
B.C.E. Other traditions associated with

Hanukkah are dreidels (a popular

game), latkes (tasty
potato pancakes)
and
sufganiyots
(jelly
doughnuts
without the hole).
The origin of
Christmas was to
celebrate the birth
of Jesus. However,
Christmas as we
know it today is a
Victorian
invention of the 1860s
Michael
and
celebrated

every Dec. 25.
Probably the most MAYORS MESSAGE
celebrated holiday
in the world, our
modern Christmas is a product of hundreds of years of both secular and religious traditions. In our culture, Christmas
has also become a time to exchange gifts.

The popular image of Santa Claus was created by a German American cartoonist,

Throughout the Christmas season, this

The Sun
From the time she was a little
girl, ballerina Samantha Pecan
dreamed of becoming the Sugar
Plum Fairy. That dream is coming true for her this weekend in
South Jersey Ballets The Nutcracker, which is celebrating its
25th anniversary.
I think the Sugar Plum Fairy
is kind of like the symbol of The
Nutcracker besides the Nutcracker itself, said Pecan, who
will be in her 12th performance of
the show. Its the best role you
can have. All of the little girls,
thats what they aspire to be.
The Eastern Regional High
School senior was ecstatic when
she was given the part, but it didnt sink in right away that her vision of becoming the Sugar Plum
Fairy had turned into reality.
It was kind of surreal when I
got it, she recalled. It didnt hit
me for awhile.
Between the demands of this
role, including rehearsing with a
male partner, taking five classes a
week and school work, Pecan has
a full plate. She had danced onstage with a partner the past two
years, and having that experience
was a relief for her heading into
this role.
That was important for me
going into it, already knowing
how to partner, Pecan said. You
have to have the stamina to go
through it because the sugar
plum sequence is a lot longer.
She said practicing with a male
partner in the past presented its

Pecan performing in 'Nutcracker'

PECAN
its just not possible. The difficult
part is giving up that control and
putting trust into your partner.
Between the dances long sequence, the difficult choreography that goes into it and the riveting music, Pecan said all of it
combined is beautiful and draws
the audience in.
Everybody really enjoys the
performances because the music
is so suspenseful and so strong,
she said. Its supposed to be the
climax of the show, showcasing
the most difficult dance moves.
The choreography is masterfully
put together. When somebody really takes the time to think about
the choreography that would
match the level of complexity
that the music demands, it can

sort of have an effect on the audience that isnt matched.

Being a part of the 25th anniversary production and having
been in almost half of those
Nutcracker productions, Pecan
called this year very special and
bittersweet knowing this is her
last Nutcracker performance
with the South Jersey Ballet.
Being part of the 25th anniversary is very special because
I have a strong connection with
my director (Andrea Duffin Conway) and seeing the fact that shes
been doing this for that long is
amazing. Shes taught me more
than just ballet. In the studio, you
learn more than just steps. You
learn how to respond to your
teachers, and you learn how to
collaborate with people. I have a
lot of respect for her. Shes one of
my greatest role models.

have been just unbelievable, but it
didnt happen and its quite all
right. I wouldnt change anything
from what happened.
After the game, Blackhawks
Coach Joel Quenneville told Semborski he was close to logging
some time in the NHL. Even
though he never recorded game
time on the ice, Topps just came
out with his own hockey trading
card.
He said he never forgot about
the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs
when the Flyers lost to, you
guessed it the Chicago Blackhawks. That memory is behind
him now.
That was tough for me and
tough for Philadelphia as a city,
but I was a Blackhawks fan on

Saturday for sure, Semborski

said.
Ill be a Flyers fan my whole
life, but Ill never look at the
Blackhawks the same. They will
always have a special place in my
heart for the rest of my life. I will
cheer a little harder for them
from here on out.
A little more than a week has
passed since the unforgettable
day. During that time, he did
countless local and national interviews on television and radio and
has somewhat gotten used to his
normal life out of the spotlight,
but he is forever grateful.
I definitely came down a little
bit from it, he said. It took
awhile to try to get over the shock
of it all, but now it's more like Im
just thankful and lucky enough
for the opportunity that happened to me. I couldnt have asked
for anything more than what happened.
