Summative Research Assignment: Aquatic Pollutants
Learning Goals:
Analyze the properties of commonly used chemical substances and their effects on human
health and the environment and propose ways to lessen their impact
Investigate properties of compounds and represent them using a visual model
Analyze the origins and effects of water pollution and a variety of economic, social and
environmental issues related to drinking water
Chemical Properties
Uses
What is your compound commonly used for?
Describe in detail how the compound impacts aquatic environments on a small scale
(e.g. a pond or river). Use specific examples in your answer. If they are Canadian
examples, even better!
Describe in detail how the compound impacts aquatic environments on a large scale
(e.g. oceans, lakes, groundwater). Use specific examples in your answer. If they are
Canadian examples, even better!
Environmental Solutions
Are there any green alternatives for the compound that act in the same way?
YES/NO
Explain.
Could any human actions be modified or changed in any way to avoid using this
compound? Explain.
List at least THREE other interesting facts about the compound. You could include
geographical areas the compound is used in, who made or discovered the compound,
is it banned/currently still being used
