SCVCS Student Spotlight: Seth Massingale

Seth Massingale

has become a

blacksmith. He can turn metal into numerous things

and his work has been recognized. He makes things
like weapons, armor, tools, etc., and has his stuff featured in TV commercials. He said, A pro of being a
blacksmith/ armor-smith is I can take piece of plain,
boring looking metal and turn it into a useful and
beautiful piece of armor, a weapon, or tool. I am
teaching my friend how to be a blacksmith. And I
have had my armor and weapons featured in a nationally broadcasted TV commercial when I was in
10th grade. My friend has a youtube channel with a decent following, and he has featured and spoken
about my creations.
For Seth, being a blacksmith means more than just making things, its a way to connect with his ancestors who were blacksmiths. When asked how he became interested in blacksmithing he said, I have
been a blacksmith for about 3 and a half years now. I became interested in it when I went to the flea market with my dad and we stopped and looked at our local knife and sword retailers booth. I almost instantly wanted to try and replicate what I saw. I later found out that my ancestors were farriers, horse shoe
makers, and blacksmiths in ancient Scotland and I see me being a blacksmith as a way to connect with
my ancestors.
Seth went on to mention what he uses to make his items and what he likes about it. He said, I enjoy being able to take something normal and boring like a sheet of metal and turn it into something less
common like gauntlets, helmets, shields, etc. If I could, I would enhance my workshop. At the moment, I
work with the basic tools for blacksmithing / armor-smithing. I even use an old grill as a forge.
He gave some tips for those wanting to become a blacksmith. Use safety items such as, but not
limited to, a face mask, gloves, and a blacksmithing apron. Start with something easy like a spearhead or
knife. Work in a well ventilated area. Listen to music or something while you work, it is a long process and
you will get tired of only hearing the banging. BE CREATIVE. It is alright to make mistakes, we all do it. Dont
give up if you mess up.
Thank you, Seth, for sharing your talents and accomplishments with us!

SCVCS Teacher Spotlight: Donnette Baumann

My name is Donnette

Baumann. I am married to my high

school sweetheart, Ed, and we have a four year old little girl with
one on the way. We live in the Upstate.
I enjoy quite a few different hobbies in my free time. First, I love all
things food. I LOVE to cook from scratch anything and everything I
can. I love to eat great food. I am always on the search for great
local food in the area that have a farm to table idea. I enjoy
cooking for my family and friends. I work as a personal chef. I am
hired to cook healthy meals for people in their homes. I specialize
in cooking for people with special dietary needs. I am very interested in how healthy food helps the body, and I hope to start a small garden this spring.
I play the violin in my free time as well. My husband and I occasionally play weddings locally, but we play
weekly in our church band. When I am not playing, I do belly dancing with a local troupe, and I will try any
do it yourself project I find interesting. I love all things artsy.
Finally, I enjoy learning about natural remedies. I love making salves and oils to help with different skin issues
or just to have a chemical free alternative to what is on the market in some beauty products. I also have an
interest in fermenting my own foods such as water kefir, sauerkraut, beet kvass. This is still very new, so I am
still learning.
I graduated from the College of Charleston with a major in Hispanic Studies with a minor in secondary education. I have taught Spanish to students from middle school aged to high school seniors. In the past
11years, I have taught both levels one and two Spanish. I have also had the opportunity to teach medical
Spanish to health professionals at our local hospital. I am hoping to teach the missionaries at my church a
little Spanish to help them prepare for their Summer mission trip to Nicaragua.
This is my fourth year teaching for SCVCS. I have had the opportunity to work for four different schools in
Spartanburg and Greenville County, but I love SCVCS. Not only do I get to teach in a sweatshirt and eat ice
cream while grading papers, but I have the privilege of working with some of the best teachers, administrators, and advisors in the state of South Carolina. I feel really blessed.
(Thank you, Mrs. Baumann, for sharing your talents, energies and expertise with us!)
