S: Mens soccer player collided on a 50/50 ball. Athlete heard a pop during contact
and felt the knee give way during collision. Pain rated a 7 out of 10 with 10 being
the highest. Pain over the medial aspect of the left knee and joint line. Athlete also
reports feeling unstable. Negative for swelling, edema or deformity. No radiating or
referred pain. No numbness or tingling in injured leg.
O: Point tender over the medial side of the knee. Active flexion and extension rated
2/5 from pain. Lachmans test, anterior drawer, posterior drawer all negative for
pain and laxity. Varus stress test negative for pain and laxity. Valgus stress test
positive for pain and laxity.
A: DX 2nd degree MCL Strain. DDX: Medial meniscus tear, avulsion fracture.
P: Walk the Athlete off the field. Ice and give NSAIDS for pain and swelling. Check in
tomorrow to reassess and send to doctor for an MRI of MCL to rule out other
pathologies.
