Experiment 1
Marble Race
ABSTRACT
In this laboratory report paper you will see the experiment title, the procedure on how to do the
experiment, the materials and tools we use. Also you can read on this paper on what our group discuss in
the results of our experiment. Conlusion that the corn syrup, being highly viscous. At last you will see our
references.

INTRODUCTION
This experiment is called Marble Race where we
test the viscosity of 3 different liquids which are
Oil, Liquid Soap and Corn Syrup. Our
objectives are to determine and compare the
viscosity of the 3 liquids mentioned earlier and
to relate the viscosity of the liquids to
intermolecular forces. The principles that would
be involved here are Intermolecular forces and
knowing the viscosity of different liquids.
EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE
The material that would be needed to perform
this experiment would be three 100mL
graduated cylinders, marbles, ruler, electronic
balance, string, corn syrup, oil, and liquid soap.
First, measure and record the mass(in grams) of
the marble then fill each cylinders with the three
different liquids one cylinder for corn syrup, one
for oil then so on. Tie the string tightly to the
marble then drop the marble into the mouth of
the one of the cylinders then use the stopwatch
to calculate the time the marble hit the bottom of
the cylinder then press stop record the time and
do this two more times after getting each the
time get the average time by adding the the
recorded time and dividing it by 3. Do these
similar steps with the other two liquids. After

getting all the results of the liquids you will have

to compute for the viscosity of each liquid with
the mass of the marble over height of the liquid
times average time of one liquid.
CONCLUSIONS AND
RECOMMENDATION
Our conclusion would be that the corn syrup,
being the highly viscous liquid shows that the
hydrogen bonding in the molecular structure of
corn syrup has stronger presence or there are
numerous amount -OH and it also say in the
ingredients panel in the bottle that it contains
sugar which has high concentration of -OH.

liquid that is left affected the time of travel

downwards of the marble.

The results that came out in our experiment was

correct, Corn Syrup being the most viscous
while the Oil being the less viscous and just by
observing these 3 types of liquids react to the
marble that was being forced to go downwards
even without the use of calculation just
thoroughly observing the liquid react to the
marble, it is obvious that corn syrup is the most
vicious but for accuracy of the results we
followed through with a formula to tell
numerically how viscous each liquid is. There is
one uncommon result we had during the testing
of the corn syrup, On the 2nd trial of the corn
syrup test we had time of 157 seconds and we
tested it again for finalization and we got a time
of 127 seconds which is too fast because of the
30 second gap, we thought maybe the amount of
