Schaeffler-DeLong diagram

Tool for predict the weld metal microstructure when using

different combinations of base material and welding
consumables.
Help for determine if the consumables will provide the
correct ferrite content, taking dilution effects in account.
Help us to predict the risk for hot cracks and embrittleness
at high temperatures.

Problem:
A fillet weld between SS 2172 and 316L, consumables OK
16.53/Flux 10.93. After welding a crack is shown in the testpiece,
the welding engineer suspect a hot crack and reduces the welding
speed to get a better solidification geometry. Instead of a good
result it get even worse. They also try to measure the ferrite content
but the instrument goes to the bottom.
What is the problem ?

Martensitic cracking

Question: welding of Type 305 stainless tubes 4schedule 40, plan
to use Tig in root run and fill up with covered electrodes.
Difference in analysis: 305 is higher in Ni and C.
1 Pitfalls, there is a risk of lacking ferrite in the root pass
depending of the analysis, so there is a big risk for hot crack
without using a 3mm root gap and use filler metal to achieve at
least FN 3 WRC-92
2 Pitfall,with a maximum C content of 0,12%, there will be a risk
for sensitization in HAZ in temp. 500-800 degr. Where Cr carbides
precipitate on austenite grian boundaries. Solution is to weld with
low heat input and low interpass temp.
