mediasaid.

What happened?
MrTrumptweetedonFridaythatMsTsaihadcalledhimtocongratulatehimonwinningtheUSelection.
HisteamsaidthattheUSpresidentelecthadalsocongratulatedMsTsaionbecomingthepresidentof
TaiwanlastJanuary.
ItishighlyunusualforaUSpresidentorpresidentelecttospeaktoaTaiwaneseleaderdirectly.
FollowingmediareportspointingouttherisksofangeringChina,MrTrumptweeted:"Interestinghowthe
USsellsTaiwanbillionsofdollarsofmilitaryequipmentbutIshouldnotacceptacongratulatorycall."
TheWhiteHousehassaidMrTrump'sconversationdoesnotsignalanychangeinUSpolicy.USmedia
reportedthattheWhiteHouselearnedofthecallonlyafterithadhappened.
MrTrump'sspokeswomansaidhewas"wellaware"ofUSpolicytowardsTaiwan.

What is the problem?


ThesplitbetweenChinaandTaiwangoesbackto1949,whentheRepublicofChina(ROC)government
fledthemainlandtoTaiwan.After1945,itheldChina'sseatontheUNSecurityCouncilandwas,fora
while,recognisedbymanyWesternnationsastheonlyChinesegovernment.
Butin1971,theUNswitcheddiplomaticrecognitiontoBeijingandtheROCgovernmentwasforcedout.
OnlyahandfulofcountriesnowrecogniseTaiwan'sgovernment.
WashingtoncutformaldiplomatictieswithTaiwanin1979,expressingitssupportforBeijing's"One
China"concept,whichstatesthatTaiwanispartofChina.
ChinahashundredsofmissilespointingtowardsTaiwan,andhasthreatenedtouseforceifitseeks
independence.
PresidentTsai,Taiwan'sfirstfemaleleader,ledtheDemocraticProgressiveParty(DPP)toalandslide
victoryintheJanuary2016election.
TheDPPhastraditionallyleanedtowardsindependencefromChina.PresidentTsai'sadministrationdoes
notaccepttheOneChinapolicy.

How has China responded?


TheChineseMinistryofForeignAffairssaiditopposedanyofficialinteractionormilitarycontactbetween
theUSandTaiwan,accordingtothePeople'sDaily,aCommunistPartymouthpiece.
ForeignMinisterWangYisaidtheconversationbetweenMrTrumpandMsTsaiwas"justapettytrickby
Taiwan"thathebelievedwouldnotchangeUSpolicytowardChina,statemediareported.
"TheOneChinapolicyisthecornerstoneofthehealthydevelopmentofChinaUSrelationsandwehope
thispoliticalfoundationwillnotbeinterferedwithordamaged,"hewasquotedassaying.
ThecommentwasrepeatedinaformalstatementbytheForeignMinistryreportedbyXinhua.
Despitethecutinformaltiesnearlyfourdecadesago,theUShasstillmaintainedfriendlynonofficial
relationswithTaiwan.
FollowingMrTrump'stelephoneconversation,theWhiteHousesaidtheUSremainedfirmlycommittedto
its"OneChina"policy.
"Ourfundamentalinterestisinpeacefulandstablecrossstraitrelations,"saidNedPrice,aspokesmanfor
theWhiteHouseNationalSecurityCouncil.
