2016 ANNUAL
CONVENTION
September 14-17

DRIVING FOR SUCCESS

2016 INDIANAPOLIS

By Bill Hornsby, 2016 Program Chair, Habasit America

his years convention theme, Driving for Success has

multiple meanings. Driving is steering in a direction and
moving towards an endpoint or goal. Driving is also an active word - its not just letting something happen. Success will
mean different things to different people. Whatever your idea
of success is there will be a number of opportunities to pursue
at the Convention in Indianapolis: self improvement, networking and mental relaxation. Driving for Success can also
quite literally be taken to mean that the Convention is easily
accessible without high airfares: Indianapolis is within driving
distance for 60% of our membership.
The Convention will again kick off with the Dine Around on
Wednesday evening. Being in such an accessible city means
that travel times will be short and the restaurant selections are
world class.
Thursday is officially designated as Networking Day! Not golf
day, not tennis day but Networking Day. Of course, golf and
tennis will be available but there will be many other options
to network with your NIBA friends or take a class provided by
a University of Innovate Distribution (UID) presenter in the
afternoon. Golf Outing and Tennis locations will be discussed
in the next newsletter.
The Welcome Reception will be held at the Dallara IndyCar
Factory which is also home to the IndyCar Experience. In
addition to seeing some cool Indy cars and learning how they
are built, our group will have many entertainment options
which will feature race simulators, photo opportunities with
Indy cars, and rides in street legal Indy and NASCAR vehicles.
Our keynote speaker this year is Derek Daly - International
Racing Champion, CEO and Founder of MotorVation and
Best-Selling Author - who will be speaking on Complete

Champion Leadership: How Fast Can You Get Fast? There is

a difference between going fast and being fast and Derek will
provide ideas on how to be fast by being creative and innovative. As one option for the afternoon session, Derek will drill
down on his keynote presentation and present practical ways
to implement. Other options for the afternoon session will
include a UID session on a different leadership topic and a
leadership breakout session dedicated to the NEX GEN group.
The spouse/companions will have many options to choose
from at this years Convention including the organized activities: Kiss the Bricks tour of the INDY 500 track and museum,
Spa treatments, Green Egg Grilling experience at Chef JJs,
The Escape Room and the less formal anytime activities at
nearby White River State park (literally right across the street
from the JW) including segway, paddle boat, kayak and bike
rentals and the Indianapolis Zoo.
The Expo will feature even more exhibit spaces this year in
order to accommodate a new breed of exhibitor. The NIBA
Board approved allowing qualified Distributor/Fabricator
members to exhibit upon validation that 65% of their total
sales are to distribution (not sold to end users, OEMs). We
anticipate a record number of exhibitors this year.
For the final evening, we will down shift, wind down a little
and conclude in nearby White River
Conve
State Park with dinner catered outside

Letter from the President

early ten years ago, I was encouraged to become active in NIBA committee work. A number of years later, I was given the opportunity to join the
NIBA leadership team. In September during the Palm Springs Convention, John Shelton handed me the gavel. I recall the emotions circling through my
mind at the time. I was, and remain, humbled, nervous, yet excited. Humbled
and honored by the opportunity to serve as the president of this great organization
Nervous about following in the footsteps of so many great leaders before me. But,
excited about the year ahead and the opportunities it presents.

Tom Pientok,
2016 NIBA President

Over the past few years, it has been exciting to see committees work to drive
resolution and results for the initiatives coming out of the last strategic planning
session. In July 2016, strategic planning attendees will gather to vet the challenges
we face and the opportunities in front of NIBA. I am privileged to be able to lead
this effort that will establish the roadmap for next three years for our association.
In September, the Annual Convention is returning to the Midwest and will be held
at the JW Marriott in Indianapolis, IN. The Program Committee is hard at work
planning what is shaping up to be a fantastic convention. The theme, Driving for
Success, couldnt be more fitting for the home of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Much of the convention will evolve around improving leadership skills and
how to drive speed throughout your organization. The convention program will
bring back multiple educational opportunities for all and will feature a new twist
to the always successful Convention Expo.

Indianapolis is a vibrant, clean and safe urban destination that offers all the
amenities of a world class city. It is home to more monuments than other US city
with the exception of Washington, DC. There are distinct neighborhoods such as
Lockerbie Square, world class shopping, unique dining, including the always delectable St. Almos, and countless microbreweries and wineries. In addition to the
Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the city is home to three professional sports teams,
the NCAA Hall of Champions, Monument Circle, the Colonel Eli Lilly Civil War
Museum and the White River State Park.
Selection of this venue was intentional. Indianapolis is within driving distance for
more than 60% of NIBA membership. I look forward to another great convention
and would not be surprised to see record attendance, so plan to register early and
get your hotel booked as soon as Convention information is available.
I am humbled, nervous and excited to lead NIBA in 2016! Thank you for affording me this opportunity!

Board of Directors Update

By Tom Pientok, 2016 NIBA President, Apache Inc

t is with great regret that I announce the NIBA Board of

Directors has received and accepted the resignation of
Mike Stein from his position as Membership Committee
Chair. Mike is moving to a field outside the industry and
per the NIBA Bylaws, he must step down from his role in the
organization. I extend a great deal of gratitude to Mike for
his years of service to NIBA. I had the good fortune of having him serve on two committees. I was able to experience
first-hand his commitment, vision and positive attitude. On
behalf of the entire NIBA organization, I would like to thank
Mike for his work and wish him well in his new endeavors.

With the resignation of Mike Stein, the Nominating Committee reconvened to consider options to fill the vacancy.
A short list of candidates was established and reviewed. I
am extremely pleased to announce Glenn Siemer, Accurate
Industrial Inc, was nominated and approved to complete
the term as the Membership Committee Chair. Glenn has
served NIBA extensively over the past several years including
time on the Edu/Tech Committee, Director-at-Large and most
recently as a valued contributor on the Membership Committee. Please join me in congratulating Glenn on his new role
as Membership Committee Chair.

enerosity to benefit the welfare of others is a readily accepted precept of NIBA Companies and their
employees. For years, contributions to the NIBA
Scholarship fund have flowed into the organization and
right back out to centers of higher learning for the benefit of
the next generation of entrepreneurs, health care providers,
teachers, scientists and leaders. The quality of the applicants
applying for our scholarships is matched only by the willingness of NIBA members to give to the cause.
NIBAs Products & Services Committee is tasked each year
with awarding the scholarship funds to eligible and worthy
applicants. The accomplishments past, and goals of the
future for our applicants truly honor the awards they receive.
2016 will again see the distribution of $45,000 in funds to
further the educational goals of these students.

To continue this worthwhile program,

three fundraising programs are
in place:
1. The Annual Go For The Gold Program:
This program recognizes companies
who contribute to the scholarship fund

Spring has Sprung

By Dell Gutknecht, 2016 Education/Technical Committee, Reichel-Korfmann Co Inc

fter a long winter (at least here in the upper Midwest)

the days are getting longer, the snow is melting and
spring planning has started for many of our customers
for scheduled downtimes later this year. We have been busy
doing conveyor inspections, and compiling a list of belts in
need of replacement and quoting the same. Since many of
these belts will be stored at the customers location for some
time prior to being installed, proper belt storage procedures
should be relayed to your customers.
Belts should be shipped and stored with the core horizontal. Storing belts on edge (core vertical) will result in different levels of moisture absorption of the belt ends and lead
to camber. Ideally belts should be stored inside to prevent
excessive moisture absorption and exposure to temperature
extremes (below 40F/ above 90F) that may cause tracking or
troughing issues during initial startup. If storing conveyor
belts inside is not an option certain precautions should be
taken to avoid environmental effects that can damage a
belt. Belt rolls should always be stored elevated on a skid
or platform to prevent direct contact with standing water
or wicking up moisture from the ground or concrete. To
prevent the belt from hardening or becoming weathered
and cracked use a perforated plastic cover and store away
from direct sunlight. This will reduce the effects of UV and
ozone damage and allow any trapped water to drain as well.
If you are shipping belts with the ends prepared for a vulcanized splice the splice area should be protected with heavy
plastic as well. We learned this the hard way when a belt
was moved around with mobile equipment with a serious
hydraulic fluid leak. Even the best attempt at educating your
customers about proper storage will not insure this will hap-

P.A.S.S. Benefit: SBLC Legislative Reports

By Mark Jadwin, 2016 Products & Services Committee,
Midwest Industrial Rubber Inc

mall Business Legislative Council (SBLC) is a conduit for small business to have a
voice and to be in the information stream in Washington on issues that relate to
small business. They send out alerts, provide a communication channel for small
business to have a voice represent them in Washington at government meetings and sessions as it relates to small business issues, laws, regulations, policies, etc. The real benefit
to our members is the information stream and opportunity to express their views and
thoughts to a voice or organization that has a presence in Washington. They are located
in Bethesda Maryland, so are on the hill constantly.
SBLC periodically produces Legislative Reports to keep members up to date. Access
to these reports is a benenfit of NIBA membership. They can be viewed on the NIBA
website at: niba.org/member-benefits/pass-program/sblc/

Happy New Year from____

the SBLC!

The House and Senate

have now both returned
from the holidays for
what is sure to be an
interesting 2016.
Inevitably, the course of
this year will be driven
primarily by the upcoming
elections. The House
and Senate are expected
to have less than 120 days
in session this year.
Moreover, late last week,
Senate Minority Leader
Harry Reid (D-NV)
publically stated his interest
in pursuing efforts to
force Senate Republica
ns, particularly those who
face a viable chance
of becoming the GOPs
presidential nominee, to
vote on some of Donald
Trumps more controver
sial proposals, namely the
proposal to ban Muslim
immigrants from entering
the U.S. In response,
Senate Majority Leader
Mitch McConnell (R-KY)
made it clear that
Republicans could just
as easily pursue legislatio
n
targeting areas of weakness
for Hillary Clinton,
such as email classification
and embassy security.
In short, Congress will
have minimal days in
session this year with
the partisanship of the
elections serving as a not-so-su
btle backdrop.
Despite the widespread
acknowledgment that this
year is unlikely to be
one for groundbreaking
legislation, there are
still a number of issues
relevant to small business
to be on the lookout for.
TAX REFORM
The odds of comprehensive
tax reform passing in
this election year are zero
to none. However, that
is not to say that tax reform
wont continue to be a
central issue.

VOLUME XVIII,

ISSUE 1
_____________________
_____________
Last Thursday, the House
and
held a retreat in Baltimore Senate Republicans
to map out policy
objectives. Here, the most
conservative members
of the House were expected
Speaker of the House, Paul to pressure the new
Ryan (R-WI), to pursue
their interest in a tax
overhaul and entitleme
nt
reform.

While there is always

a chance of a member
introducing a comprehe
nsive tax reform bill that
could serve as a source
of ideas in years to come,
in this election year it is
much more likely that we
will see bills targeting
specific areas rather than
comprehensive reform.
For the last year, the
SBLC has been making
the case that tax reform
should not be stalled year
after year because the
parties cannot even
agree on the goal
of
comprehensive tax reform
that is lower tax rates
(the Republican position)
or increased revenue for
more discretionary programs
(the Democratic
position). Comprehensive
tax reform also suffers
from the fact that certain
taxpayers will be winners
and others will be losers
if major
credits, such as the following tax deductions or
, are limited or
eliminated employer
deductions for health care
coverage for employees,
employer deductions for
retirement plan contributi
ons, the mortage interest
deduction, the charitable
contribution deduction,
the deduction for state
taxes, the step up in basis
for assets going through
an
deductions for high income estate, limiting tax
earners (whatever that
is), etc. Because of the
way comprehensive tax
reform has been set up
to date by most players
(Senator Ben Cardin,
D-MD is a notable
exception), specifically
the need
base by eliminating or limiting to broaden the tax
tax deductions and
credits, comprehensive
tax reform has become
the
third rail of tax legislatio
n. Rather, the SBLC is
pushing for precision
tax simplification which
should not end up being
partisan, since there
should only be winners
and no losers.

2016 Convention Expo

NIBA Manufacturers & Affiliate Members,
It is hard to believe its already time to be thinking about our next
NIBA Convention. Six months ago, we met at the Indian Wells for
an Oasis of Opportunity. What a great space to network and spend
time with many customers and colleagues.
This years theme for the NIBA Convention and Expo, is Driving
for Success. Does your Company have what it takes to thrive? The
Expo is an excellent opportunity for those Driving for Success to
promote their products and services to our customers.
The location cannot be better. Indianapolis will open their doors
for the NIBA Convention & Expo and we are proud to announce
that this year Expo has expanded to 100 booths and is the perfect
opportunity to showcase your products and services and to
connect with many industry resources all in one location.
The JW Marriott in beautiful downtown Indianapolis is right in the
middle of the City and within walking distance to nearly anything
you would want to do. Lets make 2016 our biggest Convention
and Expo ever!
The Program Committee continues to listen to the members and
again this year we have incorporated several changes. For the
first time, we are introducing a new category to participate in the
Expo: Distributor/Fabricator. In this category, qualified distributor/
fabricator members may participate in the Expo upon validation
that 65% of their total sales are to distribution (not sold to end

users, OEMs). To qualify, a distributor/fabricator must provide

company sales data to an independent third-party for confidential
validation.
As in the past few years

Early set-up time on Friday Exhibitors can setup 2:30 to

6:00 PM Friday and 6:00 to 8:00 AM Saturday. Please be
sure to check your shipments on Friday afternoon to confirm
everything was received.

Convention Meals Breakfast will be two floors down from the

Expo and lunch will be available in the Foyer right outside the
Expo Hall area.

Single Booth Only Again this year, only single booths will be
available for members due to the high demand for the Expo
space. Each exhibitor will be limited to one 10 x 10 booth.

This years Convention Expo is one you will want to be a part of.
Consider the beautiful venue and surrounding area we will be at and
the networking opportunities before, during and after the Expo. Be
sure to be Driving for Success at this years NIBA Convention.
Sincerely,

Ron Schuring

New Facilities
Universal Belting Resource has seen fantastic growth thanks
to a prospering and growing distribution network. To support
the growth, UBR has recently made a significant expansion
to their Carmichaels Pa. facility. Increasing the production
floor space by nearly 28%. UBR is making room for additional production equipment, added stock, technology enhancements, and new fabrication abilities to better serve our
customers. To further support these expanded activities UBR
has also more than doubled our customer support area. This
area of the expansion will now provide even greater customer care, better customer communications, and a welcoming experience for our visiting customers. In todays business
world it is all about quality customer care and Universal Belting Resource continues investing in that philosophy.

New Products
Behabelt USA has added a new stock item to the FB750
series of homogeneous flat belt items. The product number
is FBFJ750X16LF. It is a 1.6mm thick PU80A Ultra Marine
blue belt with a nipple top and a friction surface bottom. It is
made from special hydrolysis resistant Polyurethane material
for heavy wash down applications in the food industry. The
nipples are rounded so they provide grip when transferring
delicate products without harming them.
The Flexco FSK Heavy-Duty Belt Skiver is now available
with your choice of fence material. The existing plastic fence
is ideal for belt shops, where the skive width is variable and
can be adjusted with a simple turn of a screw. The newlyoffered metal fence is perfect for environments in which a
consistent, repeat skive is important. A new XL FSK Skiver is
also available, capable of skiving belts between 7/8 (22.5
mm) and 1-3/4 (44.5 mm) thick.
Shingle Belting has expanded its line of highly abrasion resistant Gray Nycor products to include the 030 and 050 rubber
thicknesses with belts such as SG333XG/XG and SG355 XG/
XG. This is in addition to the very successful 010 rubber
used in SG311 XG/XG. The Gray Nycor rubber is ideal for
tube winder belts and other Nycor applications where abrasion resistance is a major concern.

2016 Standard Mileage Rates

From irs.gov

he Internal Revenue Service has issued the 2016

optional standard mileage rates used to calculate the
deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes.
Beginning on Jan. 1, 2016, the standard mileage rates for the
use of a car (also vans, pickups or panel trucks) will be:
54 cents per mile for business miles driven, down from
57.5 cents for 2015
19 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes,
down from 23 cents for 2015
14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations
The business mileage rate decreased 3.5 cents per mile and
the medical, and moving expense rates decrease 4 cents
per mile from the 2015 rates. The charitable rate is based on
statute.
The standard mileage rate for business is based on an annual
study of the fixed and variable costs of operating an automo-

bile. The rate for medical and moving purposes is based on

the variable costs.
Taxpayers always have the option of calculating the actual
costs of using their vehicle rather than using the standard
mileage rates.
A taxpayer may not use the business standard mileage rate
for a vehicle after using any depreciation method under the
Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS) or after
claiming a Section 179 deduction for that vehicle. In addition, the business standard mileage rate cannot be used for
more than four vehicles used simultaneously.
These and other requirements for a taxpayer to use a standard mileage rate to calculate the amount of a deductible
business, moving, medical or charitable expense are in
Rev. Proc. 2010-51. Notice 2016-01 contains the standard
mileage rates, the amount a taxpayer must use in calculating
reductions to basis for depreciation taken under the business
standard mileage rate, and the maximum standard automobile cost that a taxpayer may use in computing the allowance
under a fixed and variable rate plan.
