Source Transformations
Source transformation refers to the process of
replacing a voltage source in series with a resistor R
with a current source in parallel with a resistor (with
the same resistance as R) and vice versa

In many circuits, source transformation can simplify

Thvenin & Norton Theorems

Thvenin Theorem
Any linear, resistive circuit which contains one
or more voltage or current sources can be
replaced by a single voltage source and a series
resistance
Voltage is called the Thvenin equivalent Voltage
(Vth) and Resistance is called Thvenin
equivalent Resistance (Rth)

Thvenin Theorem : Example

Thevenin equivalent of circuit shown below :
Vth = 8 V , Rth = 9 ohm

Thvenin Theorem : Technique

Steps :
Step-1 : Remove the load resistance and find the
voltage across the open-circuit terminals, Voc
Step-2 : Determine the Thvenin equivalent
resistance of the network at the open terminals
with the load (RL) removed
Step-3 : Independent sources in circuit are made
zero by replacing the voltage sources with short
circuits and the current sources with open
circuits
VTH = Voc
RTH = Req

Thvenin Theorem : Applications

Thevenins Theorem is useful in analyzing power
circuits where one particular resistor in the
circuit (RL) is subject to change, and recalculation of the circuit is necessary with each
trial value of load resistance
