HISTORY OF CASABLANCA
About 3,000 years ago, Berbers were the first people to settle in
Casablanca. After a while the Portuguese conquered and destroyed
it. At first they called the outside of it Casablanca. The medina was
built by Casablancas new ruler, Sultan Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah.
It started to grow trade with Europe. Then France took over and
decided to rebuild the city and make new facilities. Morocco gained
independence from France in 1956.

SOME OF THE NEW FACILITIES

FRANCE MADE FOR CASABLANCA
In 1907 the French decided to make a railway near the port passing through the graveyard.

In 1951 France built the Immeuble Liberte for Casablanca. It took them 3 years to make it.
They also made the Tour de lhorloge. It is the tallest monument there after the clock tower.

THE ORIGIN OF THE CITY

People wondered, why would a Moroccan city not have an Arabic
name, but a Spanish name? In reality, the modern name of the city
comes from the Portuguese Casabranca or white house which
turned into Casablanca when the Portuguese kingdom was
integrated into the Spanish kingdom. The real name of the city was
Anfa, founded as part of the Berber Kingdom of Barghawata in 744
AD. Since Morocco gained independence from France in 1956, the
city has become the economic and business center of the country.

TRADING IN MOROCCO
The EU, until this day, is the Moroccos largest trading partner. To be
specific, France was one of those countries in the EU who traded
with Morocco.
Morocco is dependent on imported fuel and its food import
requirement can rise largely in drought years.

Morocco signed in 1996 an agreement of association with the

European Union.
