Learning Objective:
Selecting individual concepts to listen for successively to identify genre.

Participatory Activity:
-For this activity I have created several short examples loosely based around the
listenings assigned from textbook that eliminate one or more elements of music (ie
the lyrics, extra voices etc). Each example will directly relate to an example on the
worksheet.
Exercise
-Play homemade listening examples
-A worksheet that contains a matching game (6 lyrical observations that can be
linked to 6 different medieval musical genres)
Post-Assessment:
-Take up the worksheet answers an a group (itll make an effective midterm study
tool)
-Re-play excerpts of pre-assessment examples and ask if they find it easier to
identify 1.)number of voices 2.) language(s) being sung 3.) Genre.
Summary:
Developing the listening skills necessary to identify musical genre is extremely
difficult when the music is presented in its full contrapuntal glory. Isolating the
specific concepts in short examples should allow the mentees to expect and identify
what a specific concept sounds like, rather than struggling to identify it in a full
voiced recording.
