SOMETHING REALLY NEW-FLOATING DUCKS

DUCKS, CATEGORY 2
There will be two sub categories; non-floating ducks and floating ducks.

For non-floating ducks awards will be given in three sub categories; marsh ducks, diving ducks, and (geese, swan
& confidence). Entries will be divided by textured or “smoothie” and will include life-size and miniatures. Non-
floating “Gunner” type entries will be judged in hand only as a separate sub category. There is no separate prize
money for non-floating ducks.

Ducks will be floated in three sub categories; marsh ducks, diving ducks, and (geese, swan & confidence). Ribbons
will be awarded in each of the three sub categories with $100 for the best of each sub category.

CATEGORY 33 - SWAP

Any person that enters a carving into the competition is eligible to enter a single carving into category 33. The
category will be judged and ribbons will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. The 1st place winner can choose any
carving, other than their own, from the remaining carvings. The 2nd place winner is next and then the 3rd place
winner chooses a carving of their choice. From then on the order will be determined by a drawing amongst the
remaining carvers. Everyone will get someone else’s carving. The carving and habitat must fit within a 6" cube.
The Show Committee reserves the right to not accept carvings that are clearly unequal to the quality of the average
carving entered in the category.
PURCHASE AWARDS
As of this printing categories 1,2,3, (9+10+14), (11+17), 13,17,20, 28, and 29 are eligible for purchase awards.
There is a good chance that other categories will be added. Be sure to inquire during registration. During
registration you must identify carvings that you are willing to sell for the advertized purchase award price. The
sponsor of an award will choose the carving of their choice, regardless of any other awards, thus a sponsor could
choose a carving that has not won a ribbon. The check will be presented to the carver at the awards ceremony. If
you are interested in creating and sponsoring a new category contact Don McHugh, 828-327-2840.

The Caricature purchase award will be sponsored by Dr Tom Rider, a dentist. He is very interested in purchasing
a carving related to dentisry.

SALES
You can designate any carving(s) you enter into the competition as carvings for sale. If you identify carvings for
sale during registration you will be given a “For Sale” card, to be completed by you, for each sale carving. The
“For Sale” card can be placed by you with the carving after all judging is complete. Business cards can also be
placed after all judging is complete.

PARKING
Good news and bad news; thousands of visitors, only hundreds of parking spaces. Please help us with our parking
problem. Early arrivals for registration will have no parking problem but after you offload carvings and register
please park your vehicle as far back and to the right of the building as possible. Satellite parking may be available.
Additional parking info will be posted inside the center. Thanks so much for your support.

DISCOUNT LODGING
Discount lodging is available within walking distance to the Metro center at the Courtyard or the Fairfield Inn. To
get the discount you must indicate you are associated with “EXTR10".

DEMONSTRATIONS
Demonstrations will be conducted by invited carvers and artists.

DOOR PRIZES
Many door prizes this year for contestants. Contestants are automatically eligible upon registration.

RAFFLE
If you have ever been to one of our shows you know there will be great carvings at the raffle for $1 a ticket or 6 for
$5 and more good deals.

2010 FEATURED CARVER - MARK AKERS

Mark resides in Lexington, South Carolina and currently carves as a hobby since he is employed full-time
as an Assistant Supervisor for the Maintenance Division of Lexington County. His love of carving began
more than twenty-five years ago when he attended a carving meeting in a small basement of a church in
Alton, Illinois. At this meeting he was inspired with a love of carving that has never died. His first attempt
at carving produced a three-legged (because he cut off the fourth leg) “Pluto” which he still has because
he believes in remembering the journey that takes you from a starting point to where you are today.
Often times when new carvers meet Mark and remark on his work, he will show them “Pluto” and remind
them that learning to carve is an ever evolving adventure.

Mark’s carvings consistently win awards at every competition he competes in including shows in
Charlotte, Hickory, Piedmont and Statesville, North Carolina, as well as Johnson City, Tennessee.
His two favorite shows are the Annual National Caricature Carvers Competition and the International
Woodcarvers Congress. Mark has become well known in the carving world by winning a total of five
CCA awards at various shows, and capturing the Tom Wolfe Award at Charlotte. His carvings have
also been selected for Purchase Awards as well as his most prestigious award which was being
named the Grand Prize Winner in the 2007 Wood Carving Illustrated Annual Santa Carving
Competition. Mark was likewise honored to be the featured carver in the 2007 Holiday Issue of
Carving Magazine.

He instructs both privately and in group class settings. He likes to compare teaching to competing in
“whittling” contests. You never know what type of wood (student) you will get or what the subject
matter will turn out to be, but are always excited by the opportunity to advance skills and create
something out of a block of wood. He enjoys sharing his techniques with beginner carvers as well as
those who have advanced skills.
Mark has joined up with Carvingvideos.com to do instructional DVDs, currently they have done 4 that
have been released and they will be releasing 3 more in the Summer of 2010.

Mark is a carver whose style has been greatly influenced by classes he has taken from Phil & Vicki Bishop,
Harold Enlow, Gary Falin, Allen Goodman, Pete LeClair, Don Mertz, Jon Nelson, Ross Oar, Pete Ortel, Mike
Shipley, and Tom Wolfe. He is a true believer that no matter what class you attend you can always come away
with new information that can advance your carving style.
