On the morning of Nov. 28, a familiar face was missing from

campus.
For years, Bruce Jackson
roamed the hallways, acting like
he was on his way to class. He
rode around the athletic fields
making stops at every practice
and game.
Jackson wasnt a student at
Eastern; he was its biggest fan for
almost 20 years. His uplifting personality was one of a kind and
his infectious smile could be seen
miles away. That smile is now a
vivid memory for the Eastern
community who loved him dearly.
Jackson died recently due to kidney failure. He was 52. Funeral
arrangements are pending.

A constant presence
If you walked onto the schools
campus at any time of day, Jackson would be there.
In the morning, hed be in the
hallways chatting it up with students and faculty, greeting them
with his signature, How you

Soon after the dismissal bell

would stop echoing, the sound of
Bruces speeding wheelchair
would precede him into room 412.
Usually, my mouth and my heart
would say, Hey, Bruce! He is
such a part of my day. (And sometimes, I would groan inwardly because I always have so much to
do!) He would park near my front
table, waiting while I talked to
after-school students. If the line
were long, he would look at me
with the Ill be back look.
Sometimes, he might be impatient if we couldnt talk right
away. I could tell by the way he
would rearrange my furniture
with his wheelchair, that devilish
grin on his face.
One time, I joked, Dont go
away mad, Bruce. Just go away!
and he surprised me so much
with his spontaneous, hilarious
reply. On his way out the door, he
reached up and switched my
lights off. I could hear him laughing all the way down the hall, and

He was there so often, administration eventually told him he
wasnt allowed in the building
until the last bell rang at 2:15.
In the afternoon, hed make his
rounds to practices football,
field hockey, soccer and marching
band to name a few. Hed also stop
by drama rehearsals to hang out
with students in the wings and
keep a watchful eye on those performing onstage.
In the evening, hed be on the
basketball court cheering on the
boys and girls freshmen, junior
varsity and varsity teams always with a smile on his face.
When it came to Friday night
lights, he didnt miss any football
games. Even in the rain and sleet,
he was there with a sweatshirt
and blanket to keep him warm.
Nothing would stop him from
cheering his favorite team.

memorializes Bruce Jackson,
Easterns super fan who recently passed away from kidney failure. At left, Jackson smiles with
members of an Eastern girls soccer team.

When it all began

Jackson was born with cerebral palsy and lived at The
Voorhees Rehabilitation & Care
Center on Laurel Road across the
street from Eastern. His time at
the high school started about 17
years ago according to Gary Worthington, health and physical education teacher and close friend
of Jackson. The rehabilitation
care center staff and members
would regularly walk around
Easterns campus to let the members get fresh air and exercise.
Jackson would wander toward
the football field when physical
education classes were taking
place during the day.
He started coming over on a
regular basis and it got to the
point where every day he was
coming over, acknowledging us,
saying hi, had a big smile and a
lot of energy, recalled Worthington. We didnt know who he was
until he brought out his letter
board and started communicating. We found out his name is
Bruce and he lives across the
street at the rehabilitation center,
and from that point, he was at our
side ever since.

Part of the team

Worthington has been involved
in many sports since he started at
Eastern and is the assistant coach
for three sports wrestling, football and softball. Through those
sports, Jacksons bond grew not
only with Worthington, but the
coaching staff of all those teams
and the student athletes. His constant presence at games and practices showed how much he loved
being a part of their lives, and
they showed him the same
amount of love right back.
Rain, sleet or snow, we always
saw him regardless of what we
were doing, Worthington said.
He was a part of us; we started
calling him Coach Bruce. He tried
working out with us; he wanted to
be able to coach the kids and
wanted us to give him a directive
to coach the kids. It was hard to
communicate, but everybody

loved him. The kids adored him.

Eastern English teacher Walter Bowne added that sometimes
Jackson was the entire cheering
section for a team and that was
enough.
Some kids have said, The
only person that stayed for my
volleyball game was him,
Bowne recalled.
He was always at everyones
games and he was team spirit in a
form of a person, said freshmen
Kelli McGroarty. He was always
there to pick people up and was
such a happy guy.
Former student and football
player Sean McAleer recalled a
2003 semifinal football game at
Cherokee where the players and
coaches made special arrangements to make sure Jackson was
there, and he made a statement at
the visitors stadium.
We got a special vehicle for

him to come to the Cherokee

game, the 2004 graduate said.
He came down the hill waving
his Eastern shirt and thats
where Cherokee was coming out.
He had so much fun and enjoyed
being around us as a football
team. He loved being a part of
Eastern and thats why hes considered family.
Jackson didnt just show up to
sporting events. He went to
marching band practices, drama
rehearsals, dance practices and
various club meetings.
He always had a smile on his
face cheering on every team,
sport or non sport, said senior
Brooke Stafford. He was basically our No. 1 fan and the happiest
guy around.
Bruce made sure to attend all
of our marching band practices,
said Emily Heiser, a 2005 graduate. They were two nights a week
plus the football game performance and if a band competition
was home, you could always
count on Bruce to be there with
his Eastern spirit cheering us on.
He wasnt just a fan; he was a part
of the team.

Unable to communicate verbally,

Jackson
communicated
through a letter board that he carried with him everywhere. He
also communicated with his
smile and gestures.
Hed point to it and youd
know what he was talking about,
Worthington said. He would verbally say certain things or mumble stuff, and I got to the point
where I was around him so much,
I started understanding him. And
while he was pointing to the letters, I could understand what he
was saying before he even finished it. Just being with somebody so long, you became accustomed to it.

Getting around
Jackson used a wheelchair to
get around and because he used it
so often riding to Eastern and due
to parts breaking frequently, Worthington created a GoFundMe
fundraiser to raise money for a
new wheelchair. The original goal
was $5,000, and more than $20,000
was raised in less than two weeks.
I wanted him to be able to do
things free without having to
worry about the battery dying,
Worthington said. With the new
wheelchair, he could last four or
five days on one battery. He could
reach up to access things on
shelves, he could lay back and
take a nap if he wanted to and he
took a lot of naps. It enabled him
to be more free.
Jacksons new wheels were
also essential because he made
the rounds in other parts of the
area. Even if you didnt go to
Eastern, chances are you saw him
in and around Voorhees. He made
frequent trips to the Carmike
Movie Theater and Coffee Works,
listening to music and performing interpretative dances. You
might have also seen him riding
down Route 561. Every now and
then, motorists called the police
to report a crazy guy riding
down the busy road in his wheelchair. Every time, the police knew
it was Jackson. And they let him
keep riding.
He kept riding all the way to

Happy holidays!

Cherry Hill, NJ 08002

A thank you to everyone who helped to brighten the season for those in need
s the holiday season begins to
wind to a close, we want to
take this opportunity to thank
everyone who stepped up to help those
in need. This time of year usually
brings out the best in people. Judging
from the number of announcements
we received from our readers regarding donation drives, it looks like this
year was no exception.
Every year, even in communities
such as ours, there is a great need for
donations of warm clothing, food and
gifts for the holiday season. The need is
there regardless of whether there is a
local disaster, such as Hurricane

Stepping up
Thank you to everyone who lent a helping
hand to those in need this holiday season.
But giving shouldnt stop just because the
holidays arent over. Tell us about your
donation drive throughout the year,
and well share it with the rest of the
community.

Sandy a few years ago.

Every year, our communities are in
need of help.
Over the past few weeks, we have
had the pleasure of publishing stories
about efforts to lend a hand. Like always, there were the usual Toys for Tot
drives and more. We dont keep a for-

mal count of the number of holiday

fundraising event stories we publish
from year to year, but it certainly
seemed that, in 2016, there were many.
So, we thank those individuals and
groups who organized these efforts.
And, on behalf of them, we also thank
everyone who picked up an extra can
of non-perishable food, an additional
bag of dog food, one more toy and
more. To all of those who reached a little deeper into their wallets this year to
help out, your generosity truly made a
difference.
We wish everyone a happy holiday
season and hope for a wonderful 2017.

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over underway

The Voorhees Township Police Department will be cracking down on drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs as part of the
annual end of the year Drive Sober or Get
Pulled Over statewide campaign. This initiative will continue through Jan. 1. State
and local law enforcement officials will be
conducting saturation patrols and sobriety
checkpoints focusing on motorists who
may be intoxicated while driving.
The national Drive Sober or Get Pulled
Over effort endeavors to raise awareness
about the dangers of impaired driving
through a combination of high-visibility
enforcement and public education.
During the last five years, New Jersey
has experienced more than 41,000 alcohol
involved crashes resulting in more than
800 fatalities. Last year, 29 percent of all
motor vehicle fatalities in New Jersey were
alcohol-related. Nationally, more than
10,000 people die each year in drunk driving crashes.
Our police offer the following advice for
the holiday season:
Take mass transit, a taxi, Uber or
similar service or ask a sober friend to

drive you home.

If you see an
impaired driver on
the road, contact
law enforcement.
Your action may
save someones life
and failure to act
could cost a life.
Spend
the
night where the activity or party is
held.
Be responsible. If someone

drinking, do not
let that person get MAYORS MESSAGE
behind
the
wheel.
Voorhees Township has continued our
Voorhees/Evesham Saves Lives Program to help our residents get home safely from local bars and restaurants. This
program is a joint venture between
Voorhees and Evesham townships providing free rides home from participating es-

tablishments to residents of either municipality. Residents simply open the Uber app
at
one
of
the
participating
restaurants/bars and will see a safe ride
option at the bottom of the screen. A free
Uber ride home will be provided. The free
service will not be provided from one establishment to another. Voorhees/Evesham Saves Lives utilizes an agreement
with Uber and BeMyDD and is available
seven days a week from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. To
date, the program has safely taken more
than 2,000 Evesham and Voorhees residents to their homes free of charge.
No tax dollars are used for this program.
It is fully funded through contributions
from local foundations, donors and businesses.
Santa Claus has arrived at the
Voorhees Town Center! He will be available for photographs Monday to Saturday
from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sundays from 11 a.m.
to 6 p.m. and Christmas Eve from 10 a.m. to

Samaritan opens freestanding

hospice center in Voorhees
Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice anticipates a late-fall opening of South Jerseys first freestanding inpatient hospice center.
The $15 million, state-of-the-art
project named The Samaritan
Center at Voorhees will provide
comprehensive short-term hospice care in a homelike setting.
A VIP dedication ceremony
was held on Nov. 30, with admissions expected to begin soon after.
Located at 265 Route 73, the
30,000-square-foot center is designed to serve people of any age
coping with advanced illness.
Most people want to spend
their final days at home, but that
is not always possible, especially
for people with complex needs,
explains Mary Ann Boccolini,
president and CEO of not-forprofit Samaritan. The Samaritan Center will offer a soothing
setting for patients whose pain
and symptoms require continually supervised care that is best provided in an inpatient setting.
Features of the Samaritan Center at Voorhees include: 18 private
rooms; a palliative medicine suite
(physician practice focusing on
comfort care); a meditation room;
counseling rooms; and a 98-seatcapacity community education

room.
Nestled on a wooded site, the
one-floor
building
features
peaked roofs, wood-style siding,
painted shutters, and three
wings, each with six patient
rooms.
Every wing features a country
kitchen, dining room, family
room and childrens alcove.
Rooms are attractively decorated,
with medical equipment mostly
hidden. Large windows provide
ample natural light, plus soothing
views of surrounding gardens.
The centers medical suite will
house Samaritans Palliative
Medical Partners. The physician
and nurse practitioner practice
specializes in palliative medicine:
care aimed at relieving symptoms
and enhancing quality of life at
any stage of illness.
Although this is Samaritans
and South Jerseys first freestanding hospice center, the organization has long provided inpatient
care in area hospitals, as well as
hospice services in patients
homes, nursing centers and assisted-living facilities.

The NICU at Virtua

Voorhees was recently
the recipient of special
gifts from the MOMS Club
of Medford Area. The
group collected items
during November and assembled care packages
for families with infants
in the NICU. November
was Prematurity Awareness Month, and several
of the groups members
and their families have
had personal experiences
with the NICU. Pictured
above is a MOMS Club
members son who was
born at 27 weeks six
years ago and spent time
at Virtua Voorhees NICU.
The MOMS Club felt that
not only would its collection help brighten a family's day but that it would
also bring awareness to
the difficulties faced by
these families.

Pomerantz: He loved so much

POMERANTZ
Continued from page 1
I am chuckling right now, and
crying a little bit, too, at the memory of such moments.
The Wednesday before Thanksgiving break, Bruce was at my
door just after the dismissal bell.
Wed arranged that time to meet
because thered be plenty of time
to plan his talk it was an early
dismissal day! Bruce was going
to give a talk to the Key Club, and
we were going to develop a list of
topics that Bruce wanted to talk
about. We were going to prepare
the answers to a whole bunch of
questions that we guessed, together, that students would want to
ask. He was really good with that
spelling-board, and I had become
facile interpreting it, too. Mostly,
I could guess his next word after
two or three letters. (We were
going to write his memoirs this
year.)
But as fate would have it, I was
so sick that day that I could barely
talk. I still see the image of his
face his disappointment when I
told him I was going home and
that we would have to reschedule
our planning session for the Monday after break.

Im so sorry, Bruce, but happy

Thanksgiving, I croaked.
Aw, man! he groused. Alright, he said, finally. You. (I
think he meant, You, too.)
Bruce had an undying, relentless, and incomprehensible passion for life. Over the past year
alone, we made marketing material for his Avon business, applied
to college (he ended up going to a
weekly community lecture series
about baseball), and polished his
resume so he could continue to
advocate for himself and try to
find a job. He enjoyed so much:
his long list of friends (it could
take an hour to go through his
email!), ice cream sundaes at that
frozen yogurt place that used to
be in the Ritz Center, wheelchair
dancing (he was going to perform
for the Key Club), movies, Coffee
Works... He loved so much: his
family, his dearly departed wife,
and especially his Eastern family.
Students, coaches, colleagues,
all of us. This school, from top to

bottom, has given so richly to

Bruce, and he to us. We all have
Bruce stories.
On one of my visits to the ICU,
his mother and sister were there.
They are speechlessly grateful for
the connections Bruce had with
the school. With us. Id wanted to
talk to Bruce for awhile, remember back over some of the times
weve had.
I did tell him that I miss the
hum of his wheelchair that I
miss him. I fully intended to say
that I love him, but I felt intimidated, so I gave him a kiss on the
forehead, and turned to go.
His sister, Reverend Jackson,
said, softly and pensively, You
know, we all have two families:
the families we are born into, and
the families we make for ourselves.
We miss you, brother Bruce.
Susan Pomerantz is an English
teacher at Eastern Regional High
School. She wrote this tribute on

Silver is a member of Operation Yellow Ribbon of South Jersey, who along with The Warriors
Watch Riders gave Knight a Mug
N Hug style welcome home. Both
organizations met at Dunkin
Donuts on Cross Keys Road and
made their way down New Freedom Road to Golden Nugget Tavern with the American flag and
local emergency personnel to surprise Knight while he was out
with friends.
Its Mug N Hug because mug
is a handshake and we give him a
hug, Silver said. We show up as
loud as we can, pull him out and
give him a handshake and hug.
This is amazing, all my
friends, Dave Silver especially
and the riders, its amazing, said
the 23-year-old Knight, who was

still in shock. Its such a great

feeling coming home to this
knowing you have the support of
home, friends and family.
Knight, who grew up in
Voorhees and is a graduate of
Eastern Regional High School, recently returned home from a
nine-month
deployment
in
Afghanistan. He is based out of
Fort Carson, Colo., and is in
South Jersey spending time with
friends before he heads to Florida
to see his family. He goes back to
Colorado to report for active duty
on Jan. 2.
Honors he has received include
the Army Good Conduct Medal
and the Army Commendation
Medal.
Director of the Camden County Office of Veterans Affairs Rev.
Floyd White was on hand and presented Knight with the Camden
County Military Service Award
and a military service medal for
his honorable service.
Thank you for your commit-

ment to excellence and for your

commitment to the United States
of America, Floyd said. God
bless you.
Knight also received a proclamation from Congressman Donald Norcross.
Members from Operation Yellow Ribbon, who sent Knight care
packages while he was deployed
overseas, thanked him for his
service, sacrifices and commitment.
You decided to take on the
world in the form of military
service for the U.S. Army; thats
an unimaginably huge thing that
I cant even wrap myself around,
Terry McGinnis of Operation Yellow Ribbon said to Knight.
We dont use the word hero
loosely around here, but you are
the definition of a true hero, Silver said. You are a protector,
youre a provider of our freedoms. We only get to be here because of people like you who
served our country.
