At the beginning
of the year, I just
met this
standard, but
now towards the
end the year, I
have advanced
in formatting my
evidence and
explaining how
the evidence
relates to the
topic within the
analysis. In my
essay for TKAM,
I weaved my
evidence
thoroughly as
well as
explained in
depth how the
evidence relates
to the topic in my
analysis.

opposing claims,

Analyze how an
author's choices
concerning how
to structure a
text, order
events within it
(e.g., parallel
plots), and
manipulate time
(e.g., pacing,
flashbacks)
create such
effects as
mystery, tension,
or surprise.
I also exceeded
in this standard
by being able to
analyze that the
author in the
Cask of
Amontillado
uses specific
writing structures
in the story to
engage the
reader and make
them want to
continue reading
as well as to
want to know
how Montressor
kills Fortunato.
The author uses
specific
structures in
order for the
reader to want to
continue reading
and know how
the story ends.
The author uses
structures such
as mystery and
suspense to
intrigue the
reader.

Bearing grudges

having read
Letters from
Birmingham,
Kings purpose
was to explain to
the clergymen
that we must
follow just laws
that uphold the
humane
treatment of
others and have
equal rights for
all men. He uses
rhetoric styles
such as ethos,
pathos, and
logos to
emphasize his
point of view. He
tells the
clergymen that
he too is one of
the Christian
church, and all
he wants is to
develop a
brotherhood with
the clergymen,
but he must fight
for what is right.
He uses pathos
by talking about
how God was an

logos by using
evidence of
saints that say
that we must
follow just laws
that uphold the
humane
treatment of
others and that
we should not
follow unjust
laws that
degrade and
represent
inhumane
treatment of

Writing: Develop
claim(s) and
counterclaims
fairly, supplying
evidence for
each while
pointing out the
strengths and
limitations of
both in a manner
that anticipates
the audience's

I have exceeded
the standard
with developing
claims and
counterclaims
using evidence
for each in my
TKAM essay.In
my essay, I used
my claims about
how Atticus is
respectful,
understanding,
well-mannered,
and knows the
hardships others
experience.
These all relate
back to my
thesis on
empathy and
specifically
explain to the
audience how
Atticus is the
most empathetic
character in the
story.

I have advanced
in this standard

understand how
to develop my
TKAM essay in a
manner that is
written to the
best of my
ability. I
proofread many
times in order to
make sure the
essay is written
clearly and that
there are not any
