Tutorial 6

Please play the various examples that spin out (Fortspinnung) the musical materials
in the Corelli and Vivaldi examples (use your own examples if you like):
-walking bass NAWM 94a) Corelli mm. 1-2
-suspensions NAWM 94b) Corelli mm. 4-7 vln II. (drives music forward); chain of
suspensions
-sequences NAWM 94d) Corelli mm. 15 lower two voices or Vivaldi mm. 3-7, 37-41 vln. 1
(drives music forward)
-repeated melodic idea at different degrees
-usually expressed within harmonic circle of 5ths
-arpeggiation NAWM 96 Vivaldi mm. 10 repeated 11 etc.
-Fugal material: NAWM 94b) Corelli opening (see Burkholders description at the end of
the piece, p. 689 bottom, which describes the varied presentations of the opening
material.
-melodic material: NAWM 96 Vivaldi mm. 24-onward (spinning out)
-usually no secondary themes
-develops melodic idea-unfolds; fugal-imitative, sequential
-treatment, brief modulations closing in nearby keys
-spinning out-extending the fragment-Fortspinnung
-unbroken flow of musical thoughts generated out of a
single idea, through repetition, rhythmic repetition
-improvised & embellished written melodies
-trills, turns, appoggiaturas, mordents, scalar passages, arpeggiation, susp.
-decorative, added complexity
-cadenza-(slow movements) improvised extension of 6/4 chord in cadence at end of mov.
