One-week workshop on Practical Applications of Data Mining, IBM-Bluemix, and IBM-Watson 33 SAINT MARY'S (December 5-9, 2016) UNIVERSITY S< ‘One University. One World. Yours. National Institute of Technology Goa Byer coat Dr. Pawan Lingras Mr. Stephen Greene ee eee ere ec TCP UT Meer at Cee een ROLCLY Prada eee ke rst) eRe) Saint Mary’s University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Overview: Education, research, and practice of Computing Science (CS) and Information Technology (IT) has taken an added dimension with a significant accumulation of data leading to a data explosion. Corporations have coined the term Big Data to distinguish the current state of data accumulation from the previous data processing cfforts. While managing the big data is a challenge, it is mostly viewed as an opportunity to improve business and industry practices. ‘This course is divided into two parallel streams: data mining and development of analytics applications. Data mining stream focuses on the use of data analytics across many aspects of business and industry. We will begin with a deep yet accessible understanding of the mathematics behind the data mining techniques. The mathematical understanding of the data mining techniques enables practitioners to conform these techniques to their analytical needs. ‘We will earn how to apply these techniques to real-world problems. Analytical application development stream guides students through two of the cutting edge IBM technologies: Bluemix and Watson. With developer-centric compute models, instant access to over 150 services — including ones that facilitate modern architecture and delivery practices around mobile, microservices, DevOps and continuous delivery — Bluemix makes it easier to ship powerful, high-quality software every day. IBM Watson is a technology platform that uses natural language processing and machine learning to reveal insights from large amounts of unstructured data. Students will develop web, mobile, and cloud technologies to develop apps using Bluemix. The apps will be farther enhanced with advanced data analytics using IBM Watson based on relationships between multiple datasets. Objectives: 1, Learn the mathematics behind the data mining techniques with the help of tracing the algorithms through numeric calculations. Learn the essentials of R programming language. Learn how to model real-world objects using available data. Apply data mining techniques to discover meaningful knowledge. Use TBM-Bluemix to develop web, mobile, and cloud apps Use IBM-Watson along with Bluemix to develop data analytics applications Combining knowledge from multiple datascts to enhance analytics NOB aeD Hands-on learning: ‘The instructors are practitioners of active learning methodology. In the data mining stream, every lecture will include hands on learning including, working through numerical examples to understand the algorithms. Students will use of a real-world retail datasets and MySQL to learn data cleaning, processing and modeling. The processed datasets and the language R will be used for unsupervised profiling of customers and products, supervised classification of customer purchasing power based on the products bought, use of prediction techniques for inventory management, and finally market basket analysis for creating recommender systems. ‘The instructor has experience with retail datasets from a national supermarket chain, a smaller specialty store chain, and a large wholesaler. Students will use one of these datasets, MySQL, and R to learn real world data mining skills to gain practical experience as well as an understanding of design of research experiments. The analytical application development stream will begin with developing simple applications and deploying them for multiple web and mobile platforms. The students will learn the use of cloud foundry for application development. These simple applications will then be extended with analytics on large datasets using two of IBM’s cutting edge technologies: Bluemix and Watson. The course will end with an exciting mini-hackathon, where the students will pitch an idea, rapidly prototype an app and present it to the judges.
