Muscular and Nervous Systems

By Andre Ng, Hannah Persky, Quinton

Graybeal, and Jessica Stewart

Muscular System Tissues/Organization

Smooth
Cardiac
Skeletal

Smooth

*pipe = arteries

How it works:
Purpose:
- Brain sends message to
performs
muscles
involuntary
- Muscles expand/contract
actions (ex:
- Action happens (ex: shape of
bladder, uterus,
lens changed to focus eye,
digestive tract,
blood pushed through body)
eye, artery walls)

Cardiac

*aquarium pump = pacemaker

Purpose: pumps
blood in/out of heart

How it works:
Coordinated
contractions of
pacemaker pumps
blood out of the
atria

Skeletal
Purpose:
moves
limbs/body
voluntarily

How it works:
- Brain sends message to
muscles
- Muscles expand/contract,
pulling on the bones
- Limb moves

Nervous System Tissues/Organization

Central Nervous System
Brain
Spinal cord
Peripheral Nervous System
Nerve Fibers (Branches out from spinal
cord to whole body)
Cells/Tissue
Neurons
Motor(voluntary functions)
sensory(involuntary functions)

Central Nervous System

Purpose:
- Brain: processes information & sends them
throughout the body
*outlet
- Spinal cord: carries messages from brain
nerve branches & triggers reflexes

*extension cord

Peripheral Nervous System

Purpose: sends impulses from

central nervous system organs
and vice versa
*infrared thermometer

How it Works
Messages start in brain as electrical signal
Messages pass through neurons
1. Converted to electrical signal in dendrite
2. leave the neurons axon as a chemical signal
3. repeat

How the 2 systems Interact

1. Messages sent from brain (power socket),
through spinal cord (power strip), & along
neuron branches (light string)
2. Muscles receive message
3. Muscles expand/contract
