Through this course students should be able to

Understand the basic concepts of mechanics of materials and principles of elasticity


theory

Encompasss the knowledge of stress, strain and constitutive laws for linear elastic
materials

Comprehend the concept of energy methods in structural engineering problem

Percieve the knowledge of shear approximations, shear flow and shear center

Unit I
Theories of stress and strain : Stress at a point, Stress notation, Symmetry of
stress array, Stress on an arbitrarily oriented plane, Transformation of stress,
Principal stresses and other properties, Differential equations of motion of a
deformable body
Unit II
Inelastic material behavior and theories of failure : Limitations on the use of
uniaxial stress-strain data, Nonlinear material response, Yield criteria, Yielding of
ductile metal, Alternative yield criteria, General yielding
Unit III
Thick walled pressure vessel and curved beams : Basic relations, Stress
components at sections far from ends for a cylinder with closed ends, Stress
components and radial displacement for constant temperature, Fully plastic pressure
and autofrettage, Rotating disks of constant thickness, Curved beams-Introduction,
Circumferential stresses in a curved beam, Radial stresses in curved beams
Unit IV
The Energy Methods : Principle of stationary potential energy, Castiglianos
theorem on deflections, Castigliano's theorem on deflections for linear load-deflection
relations, Deflections of statically determinate structures, Statically indeterminate
structures
Unit V
Torsion : Torsion of a prismatic bar of circular cross section, Saint-Venant's semi
inverse method, Linear elastic solution, The Prandtl elastic-membrane(soap-film)
analogy, Narrow rectangular cross section, Torsion of rectangular cross section
members
Unit VI
Shearing Stress in Beam : Approximations for shear in thin-wall beam cross
sections, Shear flow in thin-wall beam cross sections, Shear center for a channel
section, Shear center of composite beams formed from stringers and thin webs,
Shear center of box beams
