Secret formula for writing melodies from a given opening.

First we do the rhythm.

The given opening might have an anacrusis or it might not.
It may give you as little as two bars. You may even need to finish the
second bar. Just copy the anacrusis if there is one, or just add one beat
with the same note types as the anacrusis.
Bar 3 Copy rhythm of bar 1.
Bar 4. Long note plus anacrusis to next phrase if there was one at the
start.
Bar 5. Choose the faster note type from bar 1 and fill the bar with it eg. If
there were two quavers fill the bar with quavers.
Bar 6 will be the same as bar 5 to allow for a sequence. Bar 7. Same as
bar 1
Bar 8 long note. (check its values matches with anacrusis.) Write the
rhythm above each bar.
Now the tune
Look at the long note at bar 4. It will be the tonic note in the relative key.
Write it in.
Bar 3 will outline the dominant chord of the new key (add accidental for
new key) with the tune coming down to the leading note on the last note
of the bar.
Bar 2 might already be done or nearly complete. If not, try a leap of an
octave or 5th to get higher, if not already high, so that you can come
down to the tonic of new key.
Bar 5. With quavers outline the dominant chord of the old key using
passing notes. Go up and down like an arch.
Bar 6. Copy this, but a step up. Then have the highest note at bar 7
Bar 7 outlines the dominant chord and goes to tonic for bar 8.
See example. Given up to minim D. If leaping off a quaver, as in end of bar
6, it must be a note of the chord, not passing note.
