Levels of Government

Federal- Deals with matters that affect the entire country.


Local- Bodies such as towns, cities and counties.
State- Holds rights and powers not granted to the federal government.

The purpose of these governmental bodies is to provide public goods and


services, regulate economic activity, ensure economic stability and redistributing
income.

Public Good and Services


Public goods and services are provided by the federal, state and local
governments.

National defense
Police and fire protection
Street, highway and bridge construction and maintenance
Public transportation
Public education
Public parks
Courts and correctional institutions

Redistributing Income
The government uses a portion of taxpayers money to fund other things such as
public transportation,

Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF)-Uses government funds to help less fortunate families
get money and jobs.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI)-The Social Security Administration gives the elderly and disabled
food, clothing, and shelter.
Food Stamps-It provides discounted foods for families that need it.
Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)-Gives pregnant women or
women that have just given birth food and nutrition counseling and also provides food for their children up to
5 years old.
National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs- It gives low-cost or free lunches to children
each school day.
Food Distribution Program-Program through the USDA that gives food to nursing homes, day cares,
homeless shelters, food banks, and low income people and families.
Medicaid-Health insurance program for low-income people, children, the aged, blind, and/or disabled and
other people who are eligible to receive federally assisted income payments.
State Childrens Health Insurance Program-Health insurance for kids who cant get Medicaid or health
insurance.
Housing Programs-A program that gives people affordable housing.

Protecting the Environment-The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets standards for
pollution from factories.
Protecting Consumers-Certain government programs take unsafe products off of the market. They
also limit products that can be potentially misused like alcohol and drugs.
Protecting Workers-The government protects workers from being taken advantage of by their
bosses. It sets the minimum wage. Sets laws in child labor. That employers have to provide a safe
working environment. That employers cannot discriminate.

Monopoly & Antitrust Laws

Monopoly-Is a situation in which a company controls the supply of a product, good or


service that cannot be substituted.
Antitrust Laws-Designed to regulate unfair business practices that get rid of
competition.

Ensuring Economic Stability

Fiscal Policy-involves adjusting its policies about taxing and spending.


Monetary Policy-involves regulating interest rates and the money supply.
