Message from the Superintendent
As we wrap up the first semester of our school year, there are several topics
that I would like to write about.
First, I would like to thank the Fostoria community for once again
supporting the schools and the renewal levy that was on the ballot last month.
Those funds are so vital to us maintaining the programs that we are offering in
the district. Our students truly stand to benefit and they are our future, which is
worth all the investment we make.
The building project continues to move along. At this point we are having
an organization meeting in January, which will really jump start the design
portion of the project. This is going to happen in several phases. Right now
we have been working with the teaching staff on instructional delivery and
functionality of the new classrooms. After we get this accomplished, we will
be able to involve more people to discuss other aspect of design. It is very
exciting to be at this point in the project. Keep an eye out for construction
activity on campus in the coming months, as there will be some preliminary
work done as we are going through the design process.
Another project that we will be working on in the second half of the school
year will be the selection of new social studies materials. This will continue the
process that we began three years ago with overhauling our curriculum in the
district.
In conclusion, I hope that you all are able to enjoy this holiday season. I
look forward to the many exciting accomplishments that the district will have
in 2017.

It is hard to believe that December is upon us! In the hustle and bustle of the
holiday season, we often seem to lose sight of what is most important to us all
of the special people in our lives. I would like to take a moment to thank each and
every one of you for your ongoing support of Fostoria City Schools. Whether you
are a parent, grandparent, school volunteer, or simply a supportive community
member, your support does not go unnoticed. I am humbled and grateful for the
privilege of spending my days with the students and staff of Fostoria Schools.
This is the time of year where friends and family gather to celebrate and to share.
Our school seems to be in this very same spirit of celebrating as staff, parents, and
community members have shared in the successes of students through a variety
of events within school. Whether it was visits from our Fostoria Fire Department
and student leaders from FJSHS during our Leadership Lunches, several
guests visiting our classrooms, Veterans Day Breakfast, 5/6 Band Concert, the
School-Wide Spelling Bee or the Third Grade Christmas Programfamily and
community involvement has simply been extraordinary. The enthusiasm of staff
and parents to participate in these school events truly make a positive difference in
the lives of our FIES students.
As I look at these past events as well as the events on the calendar that await
us, it is easy to realize that the essential pieces of our school are in place: caring
families and community, a dedicated staff, and an enthusiastic student body eager
and willing to learn. These three elements working together truly give the school
the best opportunity to succeed.
As always, I am blessed with the opportunity to serve the students of Fostoria
Intermediate Elementary.

Hard to believe that we are already
approaching winter break! The weather
is changing, getting colder and snow is
beginning to fly. Remember to dress
warmly for the bus stop and remind
children to check their seats before
getting off the bus for their hats, gloves
and scarves. If an item is left on the bus
it will be brought into the bus garage.

Director of Student Services
Response To Intervention
(RtI)/Multi-Tiered System of
Support (MTSS)
RtI and MTSS are both methods
of organizing and coordinating
school resources to create a more
efficient range of options that serve
all students in danger of not reaching
their potential. Early support is
available for all, whether they are in
general education, special education,
gifted programming, English as
a Second Language services, or
other specialized environments. All
students may access a menu of options
through the coordination of services.
Through these models, families and
educational staff work together in
new ways to provide assistance for
academic and behavioral needs.
There are typically 3 Tiers of
Inclusion/Co-Teaching
On November 20th and 21st,
and individualized
services until they reach their level
of success. As students move up
from Tier 1 to Tier III, typically more
school staff is involved (guidance
counselors, Title I Reading, Speech/
Language Therapists, etc.) and
smaller groups are required. Students
may move back and forth between
the tiers as identified through frequent
progress monitoring is completed and
determines their levels of need. The
frequent monitoring is imperative to
lend evidence to why more intensive
services, and even possibly, special
education support, may be needed.
Parents who have students
involved in the Intervention
Assistance Team (IAT) process or
those who may be referred in the
coming months, will become more
familiar with this process. The IAT
at each building will invite parents
to partner with the educational staff
to determine their childs level of
need. Therefore, this information on
RtI/MTSS is invaluable for you to
know as you are asked to attend and
participate in these meetings.
Please feel free to contact your
childs building or my office (419436-4101) for more information.
