Camp Opens week earlier this summer
No it wasn’t a lapse of mem-
ory or even age or stress. Camp
Leahi opened its doors a week ear-
lier this summer.
Mainly because the DOE re-
leased students almost three weeks
earlier than usual, Camp Leahi be-
gan earlier to accommodate fami-
lies who were forced to scramble
and find alternate plans for the lat-
ter weeks of May and early June.

While state workers will be
celebrating Kamehameha Day to-
morrow, Camp Leahi will also have
a celebration of its own, Ice Palace
Day!
Campers will be off to Ice
Palace tomorrow. Buses will depart
at 8:45 a.m. sharp. Please be sure to
have your camper(s) at Star of the
Sea by 8:30 a.m. Tardy campers
will only add to a normally hectic
Friday morning!
Campers must dress warm-
ly. Long pants and a jacket are a
necessity as we will be at Ice Palace
for four hours. Campers may also
bring gloves and scarves for addi-
tional warmth.
Campers who purchase a
school lunch will have lunch pro-
vided. Campers who bring a lunch
should pack lunch in a paper/ plastic
bag that makes for easier transpor-
tation and disposal. Campers will

further stressed by the furlough

Administrative Coordina-
tor Jean Ota also expressed relief.
“Since I have two daughters in the
DOE, life has been quite chaotic
this year. They really were getting
sick of me at the end so I’m happy
they started camp this week.”
Most of the private schools
were released from school last
week, but a few, like Star of the Sea
were only released this week.

However, parents should NOT send
more than $10. Excessive cash
typically gets lost (especially to
video games) or goes to the support
of other campers. So be wise and
think, “no more than $10!”
Campers must also remem-
ber to wear socks and shoes. Socks
are not provided by Ice Palace.
As of press time, only Camp
Leahi and another small group were
scheduled for Ice Palace that could
make for a wide-open day on the Ice.
“Now I know that I need a lot of ice
in order to skate so the thought of
me skating is pretty entertaining,”
Director Peter Uiagalelei said. “But
if I do decide to skate it will be only
our little (not really little) secret, not
for you parents.” “What happens
at Ice Palace stays at Ice Palace,”
Uiagalelei joked.
“That’s why we planned two spe-
cial days at Kaimana Beack Park
this week because SOS (Star of the
Sea) was unavailable,” Uiagalelei
said. He also mentioned that this
was the best opening day ever. “It
was very beneficial to open with
smaller numbers. We spent a lot
of time with bonding activities,” he
said.
Camp Leahi will be at Star
of the Sea for the remainder of the
session. More beach/ field days are
scheduled for the future.

• Mahalo for choosing Camp
Leahi this summer. Yes, even Camp
Leahi has been affected by the economy.
Camp Leahi will have around 75 full-
time campers this summer. I believe it’s
more about quality rather than quantity
though!
• Peter Uiagalelei is now the Site
Director of Camp Leahi as I am attempt-
ing to act more as a businessman or own-
er operator. For those of you who know
me well, you can feel and see that this
is killing me. Not only am I a natural
micro-manager, but I’m also a “hands-on
guy.” I’ve been a teacher for 27 years so
to not interact with the keiki directly ev-
ery day is incredibly difficult. But I trust
that Peter and the rest of the quality staff
will do an excellent job! I’m still around
though, just in hiding!
