Aim
To conduct a circuit training.
Objectives:
1. To determine the various types of exercises conducted in a circuit training.
2. To determine the heart rate of individual based on the types of exercise in the
circuit training.
Hypothesis
The higher the intensity of the exercise, the higher the working heartrate of the
individual.
Procedure
1. 5 stations of different exercises are set up (squats, push ups, jumping jack,
low plank, crunches).
2. The resting heart rate of the individual is measured at a span of 60 seconds.
3. A table is drawn and the mean resting heart rate of the group is calculated.
4. The group training heart rate zone (60-80% MHR) is indicated and tabulated
in a table with Karvonen formula: Target Heart Rate = ((max HR resting HR)
%Intensity) + resting HR
5. The circuit workout is carried out by exercising at one station for 30 seconds
and then resting for 1 minute before the next station is carried out. There is a
total of 5 stations.
6. Immediately after 30 seconds of exercising in one station, the groups heart
rate is recorded for a span of 10 seconds. This is carried out right after 30
seconds of each exercise of each station.
7. The groups mean training heart rate at each station is calculated and
tabulated in the table and a graph.

Heart Rate/bpm

Type of Station

THR/bpm

Discussion
1. Training heart rate (THR) before training is 90bpm.
2. Mean heart rate after the circuit training (after 5 station) is 132.4bpm.
3. The group mean THR is below the targeted THR (60%-80%, 157.2
179.6bpm). This is because the exercise selection at each station might be
too easy or either the subjects arent pushing hard enough during the
exercise.
4. The station with the highest heart rate is station 1 (Squat). This is because
according to Seals et al. (1983) he concluded that the more muscle mass
involved in an exercise, the higher the heart rate will rise. Squat is a
compound exercise. Since it works the largest muscle group of the body,
more oxygen in needed to be delivered to a large volume of muscles, thus
the heart has to work harder to distribute more blood to the working muscle.
This causes the heart rate to rise higher.
5. This holds true to the rest of the exercises. Since the muscle groups involved
in the following stations are getting smaller and smaller (less volume of
muscles involved), the subjects THR drops steadily (Seals et al. 1983).
Conclusion
The higher the intensity of the exercise, the higher the working heartrate of the
individual. The hypothesis is accepted.
