toolstomeettheirregulatoryobjectives.ASMEstandardsarethereforevoluntary,unlessthestandardshave
beenincorporatedintoalegallybindingbusinesscontractorincorporatedintoregulationsenforcedbyan
authorityhavingjurisdiction,suchasafederal,state,orlocalgovernmentagency.ASME'sstandardsareused
inmorethan100countriesandhavebeentranslatedintonumerouslanguages.[5]

ASMEboilerandpressurevesselcode(BPVC)
ThelargestASMEstandard,bothinsizeandinthenumberofvolunteersinvolvedinitspreparation,isthe
ASMEBoilerandPressureVesselCode(BPVC).TheBPVCprovidesrulesforthedesign,fabrication,
installation,inspection,care,anduseofboilers,pressurevessels,andnuclearcomponents.Thecodealso
includesstandardsonmaterials,weldingandbrazingproceduresandqualifications,nondestructive
examination,andnuclearinserviceinspection.
