MSc Condition Monitoring Tutorial 2

1: Discuss the reasons for variation in efficiency of gas as an insulating medium.

2: Discuss the factors which influence the design and operation of suspension
units which carry overhead power lines.
3: Design a condition monitoring scheme for the proposed Beauly-Denny
overhead transmission line. Justify the proposed equipment to be employed and
detail the information that it will provide to the asset manager.
4: Outline the information which can be gained from fibre-optic condition
monitoring equipment installed in underground cable networks. How can this
information be used by an asset manager to inform the future investigations to
be undertaken on the cables?
5: Provide a discussion of the operation of Fourier Transform Infra-Red
Spectrometers. Your discussion should indicate the advantages and
disadvantages of the technique for investigating both solid and liquid insulating
materials.
6: Provide a discussion of the operation of High Performance Liquid
Chromatography instrumentation. Your discussion should indicate the
advantages and disadvantages of the technique for investigating liquid insulating
materials.
7: Provide a discussion of the operation of Gas Chromatography instrumentation.
Your discussion should indicate the advantages and disadvantages of the
technique for investigating the condition of oil filled plant. You should also
identify typical uses for this technique.
8: Provide a discussion of the operation of Atomic Absorption Spectrometers and
Atomic Emission Spectrometers. You should also identify typical materials which
this technique is used for identifying and why this could be of importance to
Asset Managers.
9: Provide a description of Partial Discharges and discuss how they impact on the
lifetime of the three main insulation types.
10: Describe significant changes to rotating machine winding insulation over the
last 60 years and discuss how this would affect the systems response to inherent
stress within the plant and to PD activity.
