Snowman

Lesson Plan for Adaptive Art

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE


The purpose of this adaptive lesson is to practice and enhance students fine motor
skills of stretching and placing cotton balls and gluing on buttons and a face onto the
snowman. Using contact paper students will pull the cotton balls and stick them onto
the sticky side of the contact paper. Students will then personalize the snowman by
deciding how to create the face and features of the snowman. The contact will be
sealed and smoothed by adding another piece of contact paper on top.

1. 4.1.1 Know differences between visual art media*
2. 4.1.5 Know how different visual art media*, techniques*, and processes* are
used to communicate ideas, experience, and stories.

OBJECTIVES
1. Students will design and create unique snowman project on contact paper.
2. Students will practice fine motor skills by pulling and sticking on cotton balls
and gluing skills.
3. Students will use creativity skills in deciding how to decorate and what the
features of their snowman look like.
4. Students will use communication skills when working with the teacher and
paraprofessional
5. Students will consider shapes and textures within this lesson.

Behavioral Objectives:
1. Respect classroom materials used for this project

MATERIALS NEEDED
1. Contact paper
2. Cotton balls
3. Buttons
4. Construction paper; pre cut shapes (hat, arms, buttons, face, and scarf)

PRIOR KNOWLEDGE / PREREQUISITE LEARNING


As this lesson is designed for the Adaptive students at this school, it practices simple
skills that build on fine motor abilities and gluing abilities.

PROCEDURE
Introduction/ Motivation:

Looking the visuals of snowmen on it. Pointing out features of the snowmen.
Instructional Strategies:
Completely Guided Practice:
*Show students where the black guide lines are that can be seen through the
contact paper

1. (Model stretching cotton balls)


2. Student stretches cotton balls and place them in the circle shapes to create a
snowman.

3. Student choose what hat, arms, buttons, face, and scarf to glue on.
Closing:

Free time with the collected and appropriate activities in the yellow box or free time to
read in the room.

ACCOMMODATIONS / MODIFICATIONS
Extension and Enrichment & Additional supports:

As this is an adaptive lesson, used in the 1:1 adaptive sessions with students who have
extra specials added to their schedule, it will be easily modified based on the unique
individuals needs and abilities. Not only do the students have the small group ratio or
1:1 ratio but they also come with Paras to adaptive art to further reach and encourage
their participation.

ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING
Checks for understanding during lesson:
Formative: Observation of fine motor skills, communication, and use of the shape
template.

Summative: The final piece in considering the creative design of the snowman.
