1. Has pancakarma been proven effective in spinal injuries specifically? How?
Panchakarma is the term used to describe the five-fold cleansing techniques
employed in Ayurveda. They are not the principal treatment techniques used to manage spinal injuries. Spinal injuries are treated by other karmas which come under the category of purva karmas. The acharyas of the kerala tradition which also includes a branch of martial arts called kalari have also developed special oils and special kinds of massages called (chavitti uzhichil) to treat such injuries since they were quite common in fighting. 2. How does pancakarma work to bring balance to the body? There are two types of treatments in Ayurveda odhana (cleansing the doas) and amana (pacifying the doas). Panchakarma is a process of treatment that works by cleansing the body of the ma toxins and the vitiated doas. There are two ways in which panchakarma is utilized preventive and curative. Each of the five methods have their own unique ways of working. Some of them are still debatable. a. Vamana (therapeutically induced vomiting) works by cleansing the body of kapha doa b. virecana (therapeutically induced purgation) works by cleansing the body of kapha and pitta doa c. vasti (therapeutic administration of medicated fluids into the colon) works predominantly works by cleansing the body of vta doa while it can cleanse kapha and pitta too. d. Nasya works by cleansing the upper part of the body of all the accumulated doas e. Rakta mokaa (blood-letting) works by removing the vitiated blood from the body thus removing all the doas accumulated in it. 3. Some people say that they become very emotional during pancakarma treatment. Is there a medical reason for this? This is because the cleansing is not restricted to the physical body alone. Emotional cleansing also takes place during panchakarma. The mind and body are always connected to each other influencing and getting influenced by everything that happens to each other, according to the philosophy of Ayurveda. 4. How is the concept of healing in ayurveda different from healing in allopathic treatments? Ayurveda is an inside out process while allopathy is an outside in process.
