Biodiversity

Biotechnology

other purposes such as the
genetic manipulation of
microorganisms for the
production of antibiotics.

Deport

Evict a foreigner from a


country, usually on the
grounds of illegal status or
for having committed a
crime.

Geneva Convention

A series of agreements
concerning the treatment of
prisoners of war and of the
sick, wounded, and dead in
battle first made at Geneva,
Switzerland in 1864.

Intellectual property

Work or invention that is the


result of creativity, such as a
manuscript or a design, to
which one has rights and for
which one may apply for a
patent, copyright, or
trademark.

Maquiladora

A factory in Mexico run by a


foreign company and
exporting its products to the
country of that company.

Prisoner of conscience

A person who has been


imprisoned for holding
political or religious views
that are not tolerated by
their own government.

Reconciliation

The action of making one


view or belief compatible
with another.

Refugee

A person who has been


forced to leave their country
in order to escape war,
persecution, or natural
disaster.

Tariff

A tax or duty to be paid on a


particular class of imports or
exports.

Peacekeeping

The active maintenance of a


truce between nations or

communities, especially by
an international military
force.

Peacemaking

A person, group, or nation


that tries to make peace,
especially by reuniting
parties who disagree,
quarrel, or fight.

Peace Enforcement

The use of military assets to


enforce peace against the
consent of the parties to a
conflict when, for instance, a
ceasefire has failed.

Non governmental
Organization (NGO)

A not-for-profit organization
that is independent from
states and international
governmental organizations.
They are usually funded by
donations but some avoid
formal funding altogether
and are run primarily by
volunteers.

Global Village

A single community linked


by telecommunications.
