Technology
Innovation YVRs innovator program and how our inventions such as the
development of BorderXpress Automated Passport Control Kiosks, which
have reduced border wait times by over 50% which has significantly
impacted the airport sector by improving the global travel experience.
Passengers use self-service kiosks to enter information which is sent by
encrypted transfer to the government agency, which then returns a response
in a matter of seconds. First introduced at YVRs own U.S. pre-clearance
facility in May 2013, BorderXpress has been embraced by airports, airlines
and travellers around the world. To date, more than 700 kiosks have been
deployed at 25 airports throughout North American and the Caribbean,
collectively helping more than 50 million passengers safely and quickly clear
the border. There has been more than 1000+ kiosks sold, more than any
other provider. This is a key contributor to what is called non-aeronautical
revenue, stemming from revenue streams outside of the core of their
business. By utilizing the creativity and innovation of employees, YVR is able
to let these ideas grow into inventions that make the travel process easier in
Vancouver, but also have the ability to spread on a global scale. With an
internal platform titled the innovation garden,

Trade
New flight to Dehli opens up possibilities for trade between India and
Vancouver.
From the Vancouver Sun: After Paris, it was probably the most-requested
direct flight destination, Richmond said. The comments from the business
community, even from the (Indian) consulate about how we can get this up
and running, make this a very big development for us.
Projections show the flights will add 94 jobs in B.C. and $5.4 million in GDP
annually, as well as $1.9 million in taxes and $3.4 million in wages.

But its the intangibles that comes with a direct air link that will have the
biggest potential, Richmond said.
Whats really exciting is, what other business opportunities will occur here
that we cant even imagine right now? he said. What can be sold back and
forth with a direct flight? What transfer of knowledge in sectors like the hightech industry can happen?

Diversity
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has already shown his stance on diversity in
the workplace, selecting the first gender-balanced cabinet in Canadian
history, to reflect A Cabinet that looks like Canada!
With October being Global Diversity Awareness Month, it brings up the
question: How important is diversity in the workplace?
Take the example of Vancouver International Airport, which makes reflecting
the diversity of our city a mission.
YVR has an Employment Equity and Diversity team that hosts events
throughout October in celebration of Diversity Awareness Month. This team is
a joint committee of employee and employer representatives, implementing
their Employment Equity Program. Their objective is to develop fair,
equitable and barrier free employment practices to all.
Not only do they have a coalition of workers, working together to raise
awareness of available diversity initiatives and resources, but they even
provide extensive training and education for workers on diversity and respect
in the workplace. From Queer Competency Training, to Disability Simulation
Training, to presentations on diversity by special speakers, employees are
given the opportunity to learn about the differences they see in their
workforce, their airport, and throughout the country.
It doesnt stop at awareness programs at YVR. On an organizational level,
there is a commitment to employment equity that runs from the hiring
managers, the VP of Human Resources, to the CEO, who publicly reports on
progress in terms of diversity and respect in the workplace.
YVR looks for occupational gaps in the workforce to set specific hiring
targets. Targets are created for four designated groups including women,

Aboriginal Peoples, persons with disabilities and members of visible

minorities.
Canada has a diverse population of individuals from very different walks of
life. Organizations in our community such as BCs airport work to reflect this
notion, and its fitting, during Diversity Awareness Month, for other
companies to take steps to follow suit.
By fostering inclusion and a positive attitude towards diversity, YVR has
gained much success on an organizational and even global scale. If were
asking how important diversity in the workplace truly is; YVR was named the
Best Airport in North America 7 years in a row, so it seems as though they
must be doing a few things right.

Waste Wars - "Vancouver Airport Authority won the outreach award for their
Waste Wars project, designed to increase composting from airport food and
beverage tenants while reducing overall solid waste. This project involved a
robust airport tenant training and engagement program... This project has
contributed towards the airports commitment of 50% waste diversion from
landfills by 2020."
The YVR Environment team laid waste to the competition at the Airports
Council International - North America Environmental Achievement Awards
when they took home the top prize in the Outreach, Education and
Community Involvement Category for our Waste Wars program.
In addition, YVR also attempts to reduce the amount of waste it puts into the
environment by having over 400 recycling bins throughout the airport,
encouraging passengers and employees alike to properly handle waste. YVR
also uses solar energy to heat water, as well as having the lighting and air
conditioning controlled by sensors. Lighting will dim on its own when it gets
dark or turn off when the sun is out. Air conditioning and heating is also
controlled by the number of passengers in the terminal, adjusting to be
cooler during busier times. Escalators are also designed to save energy when
not in use, moving at a slow pace until someone steps on or near them. 76%
of the taxi fleet at YVR is hybrid, and there are car charging stations

available for people who need them. In addition there are solar panels on the
roof of the Domestic Building, as well as the Airside Operations Building.

How crucial is it in todays day and age to provide prompt responses to
customer inquiries, complaints, and suggestions, but also take initiative to
personally make their visit more enjoyable. From taking a disgruntled
customers Tweet to physically greeting them at their gate, a negative
encounter can be transformed into a positive one.

Media and Marketing

While most community outreach is done by companies trying to get the
public familiarized with their brand, YVR differentiates itself by delivering its
community outreach program across the summer. Why would an airport
benefit by participating in events throughout the local community? As BCs
airport, it is important for YVR to offer opportunities for engagement and
interaction within the local community. In order to become a better airport
they first need to get people thinking about YVR not just as an airport, but as
a member of the community, the faces behind the brand.
Having a community outreach program can help market and promote new
operational things, such as the announcement of new airlines or destination
from the connecting hub that is YVR. Or, community outreach can simply
involve individuals getting out into the community, having conversations
with the people their organization serves, to help make the airport and the
organization as a whole better.
