    The history of the United Kingdom as a unified sovereign state began in 1707 with the political union of England and Scotland into a kingdom called Great Britain. In 1800, the Kingdom of Ireland joined to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The UK grew to become the largest empire in history in the 18th century and remained the foremost global power for over a century. In the early 20th century, most of Ireland seceded from the UK, and the name was changed to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
