Consider an rectangular element that has length as 2a and height as 2b The local co-ordinates
are (s,t) and global co-ordinates as (x,y)

Thus the base equation for the element will be (considering the local co-ordinate system)

 = c1 + c2 (s) + c3 (t) + c4 (st)

(1)

Applying the boundary conditions at node i, j, k and l in the equation 1

1. At node i

 = i , s = 0 and t = 0 Substituting the above condition in 1

i = c1

2. At node j

(2)

 = j , s = 2b and t = 0
j

i + c2 (2b)c2 =
