Evenbyitsusualstandards,itsbeenanexhaustingfewdaysontheleft.EversinceJeremyCorbyn
appearedataStandUptoRacismrallyonSaturday,hissupportbasehasbeenbierlydivided
betweenthosewhothinkhewasrighttoaendtheevent,thosestronglycriticalofhisdecision,anda
smallnumberwhowantnothingtodowithCorbynsmovementanymorewhatsoever.And,unlike
mostoftheridiculousbrouhahasthatCorbynsofrequentlygetscaughtinthemiddleof,thisis
somethingaleftistshouldactuallygiveashitabout.
Onthesurface,appearingatanantiracisteventisanobrainerforaleftwingpoliticianwhenan
extremelyreactionaryConservativegovernmenthavejustspenttheirannualconferencevigorously
shovellingcoalsintoafurnaceofracialresentment.ButtherearemovementsintheUKadvocating
forracialjusticewithlessconspicuousinvolvementfromthemuch,andjustly,malignedSocialist

whosunwiinglywavedanSWPplacardaboutataprotestbecausetheygothandeditandagreed

fromuniversitycampusesandlegitimisetheirailingreputationbypositingthemselvesas

solidlyantiracistorganisationswhorejecttheSWPonthegroundsthatitiswrongtohaveany
associationwiththeminlightofthe2013rapescandal,stating,

TheindividualswhosignedtheleerincludedsomeofCorbynsmostvocalsupportersontheleft
andinthemedia.NovaraMediasAaronBastani,AshSarkarandJamesButler,Inventingthe
FuturecoauthorAlexWilliams,andthejournalistDawnFosteralllenttheirsignatures,andthereis
nobodyonthelistIwouldidentifyasbeingontheright,orhavinganantiCorbynagenda.Owen
Jones,oneoftheslatedspeakersattheevent,pulledoutattheleersbequest,andeverybody
organisersincludedseemedtobeundertheimpressionthatCorbynwouldntbeappearingeither,
forthesamereasons.Whenhedidturnuptospeak,muchoftheleftwasshocked,andstartedto
assumehedbasicallyliedtocoverhisarse.
ThenaspokesmanforCorbyndidrespond

explanation;
AspokesmanforCorbyninsistedtheassurancehegavethatCorbynwasnotaendingtheSUTRrallywas
amisunderstanding.ItwasnotmeanttoimplythatCorbynhadpulledoutoftheeventforpoliticalreasons,
merelythathewasbusy.
IspoketoJeremyandJeremysaidhewasduetobeinScotlandonSaturday,thereforehewouldntbe
aendingtheevent;soIsaidto[theUKBlackLivesMaermember],hesnotaending.Andtheyrethe
wordsIusedIvegottheWhatsApp[messages]Jeremysnotaending,thespokesmansaid.
NowwhattheydecidedtodowiththatwasobviouslymakeitoutasthoughJeremywaspullingout.But
becausehisplanschanged,andbecausewedidthereshuelastweek,hedidntgotoScotlandintheend.So
hewasfreeSaturday,thereforehewenttotheevent.

shareastagewithamanlikeWeymanBenneisapunchinthegutformanyofhissupporters,
especiallythosewhoarevictimsofsexualviolence.Therearesomeforwhomhehasnowgone
completelybeyondthepale,whoseehimasanenemyofsocialism.Toappearataneventwith
suchclosetiestotheSWPsendsoutthewrongmessageonsexualviolence;toappearataneventthat
willcertainlyalienatesomeofyourcoresupportisjuststrategicallyinept.Ifyoufactorintheway
thatCorbynssupportersareroutinely(albeitludicrously)portrayedasabunchofTrotentryists,so
maybeitsnotsuchagoodideatohangoutwithactualfuckingTrots,itwasapoordecisiononprey
mucheverylevel.

ThekindofspeciousrubbishCorbynconstantlygetsthrownathimfrom
withinhisownparty.
Ofcourse,thelevelonwhichitwasntapoordecisionwasthatiscertainlyabsolutelycrucialtostand
uptoracism(lowercase)inthepresentpoliticalclimate.Sofar,Corbynhasmadeagoodstofthis,
steadfastlyrefusingtocallforlowermigrantnumbersevenastherhetoricofsomeinhis

historicconnectionswiththetaintedoldleftexempliedbytheSWP;usefulorganisingtoolsasaleft

indicatesawillingnesstopursuethisagenda,butthiswholescenariobegsthequestion;whywas
