Fridays 16 January 20 February 2015

Tutor : Alex Czinczel
In this course you will make your own pop- up book using a collection of different pop-up
structures and pull-tab mechanisms. You will use a mixture of coloured paper, collage and
your own illustrations to make pop-up pages and animate them using a variety of different
pop-up techniques. In the last session you will assemble the pages into a pop-up book and
make a cover for it. You will leave the course with your pop-up book and the practical skills
and knowledge needed to make pop-up books and cards at home or work.
During the course we will talk about what types of paper are best for making pop-up books,
and you will be introduced to the tools and materials you need for making successful popups. You will learn about techniques to fold, cut and glue paper and card. We will explore the
mechanisms commonly used in pop-up books and cards and look at existing pop-up books to
see how the same underlying mechanism can be used as a starting point for many completely
different designs. Finally you will learn the bookbinding skills needed to assemble your pages
into a pop-up book.
