His first full year serving as Member of

Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons
has been exciting and eye opening, serious
yet fun, educational and lively. With what
is in store for Martin Shields in 2017, it appears his second full year in term will be
nothing less than all that, plus some.
I was elected for [the Conservative] party.
But I am representing all 103,000 people in
the [Bow River] riding whether they voted
for me or not. I am here to help absolutely
everyone, said Shields.
Shields, who sits on the environmental sustainability committee, has spent the
last year learning his role as MP and the
things he needs to do, attending events and
businesses in the Bow River riding, sitting
through numerous question periods, private members bills, debates, committee
meetings, and in general being as involved
in politics as he possibly can be even making three 10-minute speeches in the House
of Commons in regards to debates and motions being made by other individuals.
The environmental committee has been
really interesting, weve looked at a lot of
interesting pieces of legislature and have
learned a lot, said Shields. Bovine tuberculosis is a huge issue in this riding. Ive
spent a lot of time with that.
Shields noted that his work on the environmental committee is one of his greatest
successes, and although it all cant be accredited to him, by being a part of the committee he is opening some peoples eyes to
the benefits of what drives Albertas economy: specifically oil and gas, and agriculture.
In the beginning there were some people in the legislature that believed there
should be another inch of pipeline built;
[and] also that farmers and ranchers were
this weird group of people that were reaping and pillaging the land, said Shields.
But as a committee we were able to get
people talking and seeing that there is value in pipelines. We were also able to look
at protected areas in regards to farmers and
ranchers.
For people from urban areas to understand the degree that our farmers and
ranchers are stewards and conservationists
of the land is big. And thats important to
me, added Shields.

An 80 km reduced speed limit for
Hwy 561, adjacent to the Wheatland
Crossing School, is being requested
by Golden Hills School Division.
They asked for a supporting letter
from Wheatland County council on
Dec. 13.
I know the public has been pressuring for it and I understand the
publics concern, said Coun. Ben
Armstrong. Alberta Transportation
did their study and said there was
no problem with the existing speed
limit.
Coun. Don Vander Velde commented on the 30 km speed zone by the
school in Chestermere. He said that
people have adapted to it and it is better than dealing with a possible accident. Others said this was different as
it wasnt inside an urban area.
Council did debate this issue earlier

in 2016 and felt that information did
not support a speed reduction. There
was some concern that a slower speed
might cause traffic backup.
However, Coun. Berniece Bland suggested whether there may be a need
in the future to look at the intersection
with consideration for vehicles entering and exiting the school. Council directed that staff discuss the issue with
Alberta Transportation.
That road has had issues for about
20 years. The government wanted to
put shoulders on the road and widen
it. This may be a good opportunity to
discuss realigning the road and widening it because of the traffic, said
Coun. Alice Booth.
Council agreed to supply a letter of
support for the speed reduction.
Our ratepayers have asked something be done there, said Reeve Glenn
Koester. For me, I can support this.

Strathmore, in the Province of Alberta, has given first
reading to borrowing By-law No. 16-21 which will, upon
final passage and approval, authorize the proper officers
of the said Town to borrow monies from the Alberta
Capital Finance Authority by way of debenture issue, to
pay for the cost of the following municipal purpose(s),
namely to purchase land and building for municipal
purposes, capital improvements to the Aquatic Centre,
construction of pathways, and downtown street
improvements.
The total cost of the aforesaid project amounts to
$6,000,000.00.The debentures are to be repayable to
the Alberta Capital Finance Authority in Forty (40) equal
consecutive semi-annual installments of combined
principal and interest, at an interest rate as fixed from
time to time by the Alberta Capital Finance Authority and
the annual rate of interest not to exceed five per centum
(5%),
NOW THEREFORE NOTICE is hereby given by the
Council of the Town of Strathmore that, unless a
petition of the electors for a vote on By-law No. 16-21 is
demanded, as provided for by the terms of Section 231
of the Municipal Government Act, the said Council may
pass the said borrowing by-law.
All persons interested are hereby notified and they are
required to govern themselves accordingly.
Bylaw #16-19: Textual Amendments to Land Use Bylaw No. 14-11

Bylaw No. 16-19 proposes to amend the Land Use Bylaw (LUB) and add an enforcement
mechanism for sign & signage infractions, Recreational Vehicle parking infractions, and
Sea Can container infractions in a Residential District. The proposed penalty for sign
and signage infractions is $250.00 and the proposed penalty for storing a Recreational
Vehicle in a Front Yard for extended periods of time is $500.00. The proposed penalty for
Sea Can container infractions in a Residential District is $500.00. Penalties are reflective
of the amount of time required by Town Staff. Five unrelated errors in the LUB are also
addressed in Bylaw No. 16-19.
A copy of the proposed Bylaws may be inspected by the public during regular office
hours, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday at the Town Office (680 Westchester Road,
Strathmore, AB), or can be found on the Town website (www.strathmore.ca/bylaws_
under_review). Please contact the Town Office if you would like an opportunity to
review and provide input on the proposed amendments prior to the Public Hearing.
The Public Hearing will be held at the Council Chambers, Strathmore Municipal
Building, 680 Westchester Road, Strathmore Alberta on Wednesday, January 11, 2017,
commencing at 7:00 pm with procedures in accordance with the Town of Strathmore
Council Procedural Bylaw #07-11 and amendments thereto.
Any person or group of persons, or person acting on his or their behalf, who claims to be
affected by any or all of the proposed bylaws may present suggestions or concerns by
making a submission to the public hearing.
Written submissions to the Public Hearing or the name of any person wishing to make

Municipal collaboration is a priority for Alberta Municipal Affairs

To the Editor
Municipal collaboration is a priority for our government and a flagship of our Modernized Municipal Government Act.
Last fall we announced mandatory Growth Management Boards for the Calgary and Edmonton regions. That direction was approved in the Legislative
Assembly earlier this month, with the unanimous
passage of Bill 21. Working together, especially in
our metropolitan areas, is so important right now
that we cant leave the possibility of these partnerships to chance.
The scale of growth in the Calgary and Edmonton regions results in increased demands for services
and infrastructure, pressures on our natural environment, and opportunities for economic diversification
that can best be addressed through partnership.
Since September of 2015, we have engaged Calgary region municipalities regarding the future of
the Growth Management Board in their region.
We believe the board needs to have a clear mandate to ensure effective and efficient regional planning and coordinated decision making. More specifically, we are proposing this mandate include
responsibility for smarter, more environmentally
responsible growth; the coordination and servicing
of that growth; and increased collaboration on the
delivery of regional services. The board would be
required to ensure that the right kind of information

is available to make that planning possible. It would
also be responsible for promoting economic development in the region, because increasingly regions
and municipalities must collaborate to compete on a
global scale.
We know the Calgary Regional Partnership has already made great strides on much of this, but we
want to make sure the right municipalities are at the
table as we believe the membership is critical to ensuring the board is as effective as possible. With that
in mind, we are proposing that membership include
the City of Calgary, all rural municipalities that are
adjacent to the city, and all urban municipalities with
more than 5,000 citizens.
We also believe that the western part of Wheatland
County should be part of the Board, based on anticipated growth in this area. So to be specific, proposed
membership of the metropolitan region includes:
Calgary, Chestermere, Airdrie, Rocky View, Okotoks,
Cochrane, Foothills, Strathmore, High River and
Wheatland County (west of Hwy. 21). On the question of governance, we are proposing a number of
provisions intended to help ensure these boards operate smoothly, and that all perspectives are heard.
Specifically, a double majority voting model is being
proposed. In other words, decisions must be supported by not less than two-thirds of the member
municipalities that represent at least two-thirds of the regions

population.
At the beginning of December, Minister Larivee was pleased
to share these proposals with Calgary region municipalities.
They now have nearly two months to provide their feedback.
We are committed to working closely with Calgary region municipalities as we move forward on this board. We are looking
forward to hearing from them, so together we can build a more
sustainable, collaborative and prosperous region.
All regulations will be posted online for public review and
feedback for at least 60 days before they are finalized and approved. All changes to the Municipal Government Act, including
regulations, will come into force before municipal elections in
the fall of 2017.

Christmas traditions, old and new

Fule for Thought
Im writing this column after limping over to the
computer. Im limping for two reasons: the first being the sore feet Ive had since April, due to nerve
inflammation. That has resulted in me not being able
to walk much, and an increase in girth and blubber!
The second reason to limp is tied directly to this
first one. I know you wont believe this, but Im in
such sad shape, that wrapping Christmas presents
on our floor carpet, has left me with inner thighs,
stiff and on fire! Yes, Ive actually pulled muscles
wrapping gifts, and by the end of that Yuletide experience, I was also sweating like Elvis at his last
concert! How do you sweat wrapping presents is
this how far Ive fallen? Yes, yes it is!
Speaking of falling, Breannes sister-in-law to-be,
has had some trips and gaffes over the MacIntyre
Christmases. In fact, the tradition has become that
when something happens, the family members yell
out Jenna has ruined Christmas again!
So, what could I do, but send her that same text?
Ah, traditions they make a guy feel great!
Another tradition Ive kept going for my father-inlaw has had a lot to do with seeing the sights.
Of course, the sights hes interested in, are the
Sunshine Girls!
Each year, I take on the alias of Binky the Elf
(and no, I dont dress up in tights that only happened the one time!).
For about the last 20 years, Kenny gets a wrapped
calendar of young women in bikinis, and I really
believe this tradition has brought us closer together,
although Ive never really asked what my mother-inlaw thinks about this!
The other day, we figured out that it might be
about a 25 year old tradition!
You know, Ken, I said. Those first Sunshine Girls
you got, may have become grandmothers by now!
I actually think he blanched with disappointment!
Time flies, eh Kenny?!
Ugly sweaters have also become a strange tradition, and Breannes fianc Kody wore a very funny
one. It has Christmas lights on it, with a cute cartoon
version of a bare butt Santa, leaning into a roaring
fire! The caption reads: Chestnuts roasting on an
open fire!
I did not know that Santas first name was Ches I

thought it was Kris! Then I realized that Kody was
also wearing his new Lululemon pants. First of all, I
didnt know they made mens pants, but especially
not something called ABC pants. I guess this stands
for Anti Ball Crusher pants! I think you guys will
understand the genius of pants like this todays
inventions are truly amazing!
My son and daughter have their own twists on
Christmas traditions. Breanne will begin playing
Christmas songs right after Remembrance Day, but
she doesnt always get the lyrics right, or understand
the song. Only last year, she told me that she thought
I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus was about a
cheating wife!
This year, she just realized that the characters in
another song Conspire by the fire! She thought it
was perspire, and for 25 years, I guess shes been
picturing a sweaty guy and girl, who are too hot, by
a fire! Hopefully, somethings arent also roasting!
My sons tradition is a simple one. He waits until
the last possible second to wrap his gifts. Then, he
races around trying to find the gift bags and wrappers that have just been used, run to another room,
so he can wrap everything! Now, this is an economical and green approach to wrapping! Re-use and
re-cycle is the new tradition!
I know my columns are usually pretty light, and
maybe a bit odd at times, but my family re-started
a new tradition. This Christmas Day, we lit a candle
for the loved ones weve lost, and I know many of
you are struggling with your own family members
whove passed away.
I hope you were able to find some peaceful moments this Christmas, when the pain was not so
great. I have no words for your loss, except to say
how sorry I am, and that I know they will live on in
your own life and memories.
From my family to yours: I hope your Christmas
was happy, and that 2017 will be a much better year!

As 2016 comes to a close, it is important to recap the year
that has passed.
Once again, I am proud to be a member of this great community, and I know that I speak for all of council when I say
that we are honoured to serve you, the people of Wheatland
County.
This past year, we adopted a new tagline, Where Theres
Room to Grow.
We feel this simple line has a great deal of meaning, and

Welcome to 2017!! May this be THE year for all of us to be happy, healthy and
prosperous!!! May you all who are unemployed get a great job! We wish you all the very
best this year!
Our new and not-so-new executive will be installed at 7 pm on Friday, the 6th. And
then its onward and upward for yet another year!! Comrade Jenny Schumann is once
again the President and I am once again the Secretary. We have lost a member of the
2016 Executive, Comrade Jane Calkins, who has passed away, and several others who
have decided to not run for 2017.
The Ladies Auxiliary also held their election in November, and the new LA Executive
will be installed the evening of the 6th as well. And here they are:

Some milestone projects we saw
completed in 2016 include reclamation of 47.5 miles of county roads.
Duck Lake Road paving was also
completed, and we are very pleased
with the results.
A much needed regional water
project has also begun. Working with
the villages and hamlets in the area,
and with funding from the federal
and provincial governments, we will be upgrading the Standard and Gleichen water treatment
plants and providing safe, clean drinking water
from Gleichen to Rockyford. This is a vital project,
and we are very excited to see it moving forward.
We will keep everyone up-to-date on its successes
as we go.
Another program that we are very proud of is
CERB. The program is intended to invest tax payer

year
we
contributed
$371,166.84 through the Community
Enhancement Fund, and $50,000 to
local community libraries. As well,
council introduced a new program
aimed at assisting the communities
of Wheatland County, by providing
them with unconditional funding for
programming and facilities.
The Community Regional Services
Infrastructure Program (CRISP) funding totalled $748,952.70. We look forward to reporting the results of this
additional funding, and how it is benefitting the
people of Wheatland County.
As we move into 2017, we look forward to continuing to serve the people of this county, and we
welcome your input, ideas and questions. Making
sure the county is a safe and happy place to live
and work is truly a team effort All the best for
the year to come, and thank you again for allowing me, and the rest of council, to humbly serve.

Shields has high hopes for New Year

Although his own background is mostly in education and politics, it seems Shields was named to
the right committee in the house, as his passion
for the environment and agriculture is undeniable.
The [Bow River] constituency has some of
the most productive and irrigated districts in the
world and produces phenomenal food; it is really diverse. You get hyped when you see these
things, you just want people to know how great
this place we live in is, said Shields.
This coming spring, Shields is stepping it up to
the next level by proposing a private members
bill. He is taking his passion for the environment
and for agriculture and is turning it into a bill
that, if passed, will be about farmers and ranchers as conservationists and stewards of the land
and to recognize them as that, he said, adding he
has been working on this bill for several months
and will be continuing to work on it throughout
the beginning months of 2017.
Its a very small thing in a sense, but I think
it is achievable. To me, and for our area, I want
to recognize our agricultural base. We have the
capability of producing food in this constituency
for the whole world, and we do that. We are fortunate to be in one that does, said Shields.
Shields, who spends most of his time in meetings and conferences in Ottawa, still tries to make
enough time while in Alberta to visit as many
people, communities, events and businesses as
possible.
One of Shields biggest challenges is making it
out to each of the 47 communities in the constituency and attending different events to meet
people, listen to them and represent them. This
is one of the biggest differences for him being

in federal government, as compared to municipal
government when he only had one community to
connect with.
A low point is when I am far away from my
constituents. Its hard to be that removed and not
be able to go to all the events and meet all the
people I would like to, said Shields.
This is a great constituency: great people, good
events and all sorts of industry that most people
dont know about, he said. We have lots of good
business people doing amazing things in our
communities.
Shields stays in touch with his constituents
through a strong media presence on Facebook
and Twitter so that people know where he is,
what he is doing and what he is working on. This
is something he and his team will be working
on even more in the New Year. (Follow him on

In 2018, Parliament Hills Centre Block, including the Peace Tower, will be closed for a rebuild,
which is expected to take up to 10 years to complete. Shields strongly suggests his constituents
try to visit Ottawa and Parliament Hill in 2017,
the 150th anniversary of Canada, and before the
closing of Centre Block.
Its your buildings, its your capital, he said. I
encourage people to visit your buildings within
this 150 Canada year.
Even though Shields is looking to have another
busy year serving as MP, one thing is still true: he
does not take lightly the job he was voted in for
and he is doing the best he can for his constituents.
It really is a privilege to be able to do this,
said Shields.
REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS ~

Colins father John Douglas Grant

was born in Rathen, Aberdeenshire,
Scotland in 1904. He moved to Ontario
in 1905, and to the Strathmore area in
1912.
Colins mother Marie Collins was
born in Moscow, Idaho, and came here
in 1915. Colin and Marie met while attending Craigantler School
(about two miles east of
Standard Corner) and were
married in 1931. They had
five children.
Colin was born Mar. 11,
1937 at the Holy Cross
Hospital, in Calgary.
Coincidentally, both of
his brothers and his two
children were born there,
and all were attended by
the same doctor. He and his brother
Gordon lived with their grandparents
at Standard, from 1939 to 1946, while
their father served during the Second
World War.
Upon their dads return from the
war, all the family moved to Marie
and Johns farm near Standard where
they continued farming; Colins second
brother Gene was born there in 1947.
Colins interest in cattle and farming
began while his father was away fight-

ing in the Second World War, and he

and his mother were at the McLeans
Auction Sales. Colin had a $2 bill, and
asked his mother if she would exchange it for a $5 bill. When asked
what he planned to do with $5, Colin
re-plied: Buy a calf!
Mother didnt believe him, but when
they returned to the auction, they were
just in time for the open-ing bid. The
first item was a heifer calf, and when
the auctioneer asked for
an opening bid, Colin bid
$5. No one countered him,
so he got his calf for $5.
This calf grew to be a cow,
and Colin got 13 calves
from her, before selling
her for $103. Not a bad investment!
Colin attended school
in Standard until age 15,
when he started work
building annexes on grain ele-vators.
As my readers know, farming during
the winter months is usually very lean,
so when Colins Uncle Carl (Collins)
invited him to learn to drive highway
trucks, he jumped at the chance. His
first trip was to Edmonton, where he
unloaded freight, before reloading a
38,000-pound payload of fresh eggs
for Winnipeg. On arrival, not one egg
was damaged. This became his introduction to long haul trucking, a job he
participated in and enjoyed for years

to come, but only during the winter
months. In the summer he farmed on
land he rented from his Aunt Grace in
Standard.
In 1959, Colin became an outrider
at the Calgary Stampede, and enjoyed
this for the next five years.
On Nov. 14, 1959 he married Dorinne
McMillan in Gleichen. She had been
born at Holy Cross Hos-pital in Calgary,
with the same doctor attending as with
Colins family. Dorinne had worked
for the Canadian Bank of Commerce,
now CIBC, in both Calgary and Gleichen. They had two children daughter Kim and son Greg and there are
now five grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren. Dorinne loved driving
all kinds of farm equipment, especially
the combine harvester.
When Kim was born in 1964, Colin stopped outriding and became a
gravel truck driver for the County of
Wheatland, started his own cattle herd
and hauled crude oil for Dale Nielsen
of Standard. In the winter months he
drove highway trucks for Trimac.

The Loaned Manger

held for 27 years. When Dorinne was
diagnosed with cancer in 2006, Colin
retired from all outside activities and
became a farmer. Sadly, cancer took
Dorinne away from their home in 2008.
Throughout the years, Colin had
been building up his Simmental-Angus-cross herd at his ranch near Standard, and he was well respected for
the quality of his cattle.
Colin and Dorinne loved their community of Standard, and their family
emphasizes that they got in-volved in
everything the community had to offer,
including the Lions Club, sports clubs,
etc.
Changes in this area include the
paved roads, the twinning of the TransCanada Highway, and all the traffic, as
well as the new technology available
to farmers.

Pasteur and Jules Joubert made similar observations.
By publishing research results in scientific journals,
scientists share their work with others who are able to
build on it and advance it further. They also publish
their findings and this may help others in the future.

Wheatland Society of Arts invites community
members to celebrate the grand opening of its
new studio.
On Saturday, Jan., from 1 to 4 p.m., the studio
at 115A 3rd Avenue in Strathmore will welcome
everyone who wants to view the Wheatland Society of Arts (WSA) new studio and exhibit space.
Guests can learn about upcoming youth and
adults visual arts programs, including classes,
workshops, camps and open studio time. They
can register for programs and memberships, tour
the facility, view art displays and enjoy refreshments. The grand opening will also give people an
opportunity to tell the society what kinds of visual
arts programs theyd like to see, and to learn how
they can be involved.
We want to offer as wide a variety (of programming) as possible not just the traditional types,
said Brandy Hebbes, WSA president. We aim to
have enough variety that there will be something
for anyone who is interested in visual arts. We
wish to connect with other visual art individuals
and groups to support and promote them as well.
We hope to reach all in Strathmore, Wheatland
County and even beyond.
This past year, WSA is offering primarily adult
classes and workshops, Hebbes said. The society
was also present at the Meet Your Neighbours
Festival, and placed art displays at Strathmore
Musical Societys Travelling Mabels event and the
Strathmore Stampedes Wine Cellar. In December,
they hosted several sneak-a-peek events in their
new studio.
Those who did come out (to the sneak-apeeks) were very excited and interested, Hebbes
said. Many are even interested in being a part of

WHEATLAND COUNTY INVITES APPLICATIONS FOR 2017 COMMUNITY

ENHANCEMENT FUNDING
Wheatland County recognizes that its residents utilize various recreational,
cultural and other community enhancement facilities and resources and has
established the Community Enhancement Fund to provide financial support for
such venues and activities.
The Community Enhancement Fund is intended to enhance, promote and support
groups and organizations that bring a broad range of enjoyment, benefit,
beautification, recreation, entertainment, participation and enhancement projects
to County residents.
How to Apply:
Applications and Guidelines for the Community Enhancement Fund are available
at the Wheatland County Office and on the County website:

us to have such positive feedback.
The WSA also receives positive feedback on their
classes and displays and that people want more
of it. Many enjoy the art displays because you
do not have to be an artist to enjoy art, Hebbes
said. There have also been constant requests for
youth programming. There are some youth arts
programming of various kinds in Strathmore, but
clearly there is desire for more.
In early 2017, we will be launching All In Arts
all in because there will be something for everyone, she said. We have extensive programming
plans in the works that will encompass four focuses: youth, seniors, disabled (people) and adult.
Hebbes emphasized that the society wants to
hear from the community.
We are really going to be encouraging people
to give us their ideas and input on what they want
us to offer, she said. We are currently developing
our youth programming and are very much looking forward to the publics input.
We also wish to support and promote, and
work with other visual arts avenues in our town
and county, in addition to what we do in our own
studio. The new facility does have a small gallery
and we are working out the format for allowing
local artists to display art. We will also pursue the
Art In Business model to connect artists with business owners who would like to display art.
We are about visual art all visual art, not just
what can happen in our studio, Hebbes said. If

Province mandates regional

growth participation

Opting out has been eliminated for Wheatland
County, as it pertains to participation in regional
planning and growth development.
Previously, participation in the Calgary Regional
Plan had been on a voluntary basis and Wheatland
County did refuse to participate, as it didnt agree
with the voting and veto structure.
You need two thirds of the population and there
is only one municipality that holds that card, said
CAO, Alan Parkin. That works out to about 1.3 million people, so you need Calgary on your side every
time to secure the vote. There are three rural and
seven urban, so unless you have an urban supporting
your vote, you are dead in the water.
On Dec. 6, the second round of discussions on the
Modernized Municipal Government Act was passed
through provincial legislature and on Dec. 8, Municipal Affairs Minister Daren Bilous delivered the
mandatory participation edict, for area municipalities
to participate in the Calgary Metropolitan Regional
Planning and Growth board that would replace the
Calgary Regional Partnership. Bilous is hoping for
a cooperative spirit and that all members will come
to the table and set contentious issues aside for the
greater good.
I did receive a request from the minister to meet in
January, said CAO Alan Parkin.
Parkin said he would be meeting with other municipal representatives to gain a better consensus and
clarify any issues within the mandate. He will bring
that information back to council in January 2017.
There was some discussion that Wheatland County
could argue that it is not adjacent to Calgarys border,
so would not qualify to be part of the plan. Municipalities under 5,000 people are not included as part
of the board, but residents in those municipalities
wondered how their voice would be heard in region-
al planning matters. Parkin said that those populations would have to have their views presented by
another municipality, like Rocky View County, which
have a seat at the table.
At the recent public hearing for Wheatland County
Land Use Bylaw (LUB) review, residents asked if their
elected council would be representing them at a regional level and standing firm on issues such as preservation of agricultural land and landowner rights.
They also wondered if participation in the regional
planning board could be vetoed by a majority of residents, if a plebiscite was attached to ballots in the
2017 elections.
Councillors replied that they always looked to uphold their residents best interests, but information on
how the metropolitan plan will work was not totally
defined yet. Councillors wondered how current decisions related to the scope of the regional plan and
future decisions made by that board.
What we are doing today might be affected by
this, said Councillor Brenda Knight. To me, it changes the picture. We have statutory documents in place
and have standard practises. There are precedents in
place if some things are taken away; it is harder to
take them back. I wonder if we should wait on some
of these decisions.
As the regulations move forward, they will be pretty substantial, said Parkin. They are pretty vague
right now.
Council asked that a letter be sent to Municipal Affairs to clarify the voting structure and clarify whether the mandate applies to Wheatland County, as their
boundary is not directly adjacent to Calgary city limits.
All land west of Hwy. 21 was set to be under the Regional Planning and Growth board scope. Albertans
can still give input on the Modernized Municipal Government Act, by accessing forms at www.mgareview.
alberta.ca and submitting them to Municipal Affairs
by Jan. 31.

The Foothills CFR Chemicals Bisons
were a bounce here and a bounce there
from advancing at the 39th annual
Macs Midget AAA World Invitational
Tournament.
We won five good games and lost
one. We need to hold our heads up
high with our performance, said Bisons head coach Sandy Henry. I really
like our team. We learned some stuff
this week about learning to compete
against some of the top teams.
The Bisons entered the holiday break
and the Macs tournament not playing their best. Including an exhibition
game with the Hungarian National
team, the Bisons were 1-3-2 in their last
six games.
Prior to the tournament, Henry mentioned that the Macs has an ability to
spark teams energy like boosting a
dead car battery.
As soon as the puck dropped in their
opening game with the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs, the switch flipped.
It was the best they had looked in
weeks: all four lines were buzzing, their
forwards were bearing down on the defenders, and the Bisons defensive core
was winning battles and getting pucks
in deep.
Maybe it was playing in front of a
couple hundred fans and a few scouts,
or maybe it was just the hype of the
tournament. But whatever it was, the
Bisons looked like they found their
groove from the beginning of the season the same groove that was absent
the past few weeks.
For Bisons captain Brett Trentham,
it marked his third trip to the dance.
The Bisons failed to make it out of the
round robin stage, going 1-2-1 last year.
We battled. It was a good experience
for us to go far, but sometimes you just

dont get the bounces to go your way,
said Trentham. I dont think there was
anything that I would have liked to
change from our performance.
Trentham only finished with a pair of
goals, but they were timely and he was
a key cog in one of the Bisons most
productive lines.
Playing with Tarun Fizer and Brandon Machado, they were instrumental
in the quarterfinal win over the Calgary
Royals, scoring two out of the three
goals.
The Royals game was huge for the
team. Finishing undefeated in the round
robin stage, they didnt want to flame
out in their first elimination game.
The Royals also played the Bisons
tough earlier in the year. The two teams
skated to a 3-3 tie at the Strathmore
Family Centre.
Centre Payton Krebs tied for the team
lead in scoring with two goals and nine
points, and will look back at that Royals game as a lasting highlight.
Beating the Royals was great. They
gave us a thought battle and it was
a good game. Those are the types of
games you want to be a part of, said
Krebs. It was an awesome tourney. The
City of Calgary and the Macs organization put on a great show. I think everything happens for a reason and tonight
was a good eye-opener as we move
forward with our games starting next
weekend.
Goaltender Ben Laidlaw also thought
the win over the Royals was the highlight for the tournament.
For a goalie, theres no better feeling than when the horn sounds and
your team comes rushing over to you
after a tough win, said Laidlaw, who

If people were unaware of who Cole
Clayton was before the tournament,
they certainly know now. Clayton led
the Bisons defence core with four
points, including the winner against the
Greater Vancouver Canadians with 6:30
to go in the third period.
Cole surprises me every game, said
Grant. He makes plays most [defencemen] dont even dream about. Im not
surprised he was the clutch guy at the
end for us. You breathe a little bit easier
when the puck is on his stick.
The Bisons draw well in Strathmore
for crowd support, but playing in the
Macs in front of a packed house each
night can get the blood pumping a little
quicker than normal.
Its awesome. I was surprised at how
big the crowd was, it definitely got me
going a little bit more, said Clayton.
When the Bisons were steam-rolling
teams at the beginning of the season,
they were led head first by the dynamic
top line of Jackson Salt, Zach Huber
and Krebs.
Injuries and call-ups jumbled up the
line as the holiday break neared, but
they were reunited for the tournament.
Huber tied Krebs for the team lead
in scoring with seven goals and two assists, highlighted by his hat trick against
the Moose Jaw Generals Dec. 30.
Our line is really clicking. Its easy
playing with talented guys like Krebsie and Salty, said Huber. We knew
we were buzzing, chance after chance,
it was eventually going to go in. Krebs
made one hell of a pass across the seam
and I was lucky enough it went in.
For his efforts, Huber was named to
the second tournament all-star team and
won the Most Sportsmanlike Award.
One of the great what-ifs from the
Macs will be, what if the Bisons didnt
pick up a pair of tournament-ending in-
juries to two of their deadliest forwards.

In the Canadians game, Blake Wells
was drilled into the boards near his
own bench and was forced to leave. In
the quarterfinal tilt with the Royals, Salt
was crunched into the glass near the
penalty box and was helped off the ice.
Wells is a big power forward and
Salt is a tenacious forward; they are a
couple guys that can bring some energy. Im really happy with what we got
from the APs, but Im just sad that they
didnt get to experience the full tournament, said Henry.
It was a huge blow to the Bisons
punch up front. The two forwards have
combined for 19 goals and 42 points
this season. Even with the strong play
from affiliated players Tucker Zdunich
and Mark Zachary, having those two sit
in the stands instead of on the bench
leaves a gaping hole up front.
With an earlier-than-scheduled exit
from the Macs, the Bisons will finally
enjoy some much needed off time
something more than two days off.
The holiday break was anything but
a break: playing eight games in 10 days
logged a couple extra miles on the
young guys legs.
It was a tough way to end the tournament, but I thought we played well,
said Laidlaw. I thought we grinded and
battled throughout. The playoffs are going to be similar with the same type of
atmosphere. I think we will take a lot
of lessons from this moving forward.
Henry gave his team a week off,
before resuming with a practice Jan.
7. Then theyre back to their Alberta
Midget Hockey League schedule Jan.
8 with a quarterfinal rematch against
the Royals at Stu Peppard Arena. The
Bisons return home to the Strathmore
Family Centre Jan. 13 when they take
on the Calgary Flames. Puck drop is set
for 8 p.m.

The Macs Cup will be coming to Strathmore as the Rocky
Mountain Raiders of the Alberta Female Hockey League (AFHL)
stuffed the Saskatoon Stars 5-4 in an overtime thriller to wrap
up the female division at the Macs Midget AAA World Invitational Tournament Jan. 1 at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
After a wild third period that saw four lead changes, the
Raiders took a penalty with 35.4 seconds remaining in the
third, nine seconds after relinquishing the lead.
We had to keep our heads in the game, had to keep our
defence tight and our offensive pressure up, said Hailey McCallum, who plays with the Raiders and attends Strathmore
High School.
Killing the 1:25 of Stars power play in the extra frame, the
Raiders were rewarded with their own power play minutes
later.
That is when Rachel Weiss etched her name into Macs tournament lore.
Taking a feed from leading scorer Nicole Fry, Weiss picked
the top corner from two feet out as her bench poured out onto
the ice forming a giant purple dog pile.
For Langdon product Emma Borbandy and McCallum, revenge never tasted sweeter.
Both members of last years squad that was on the other side
of the dog pile in the championship game, it was extra special
to be on the winning side this time around.
Surreal moment, I cant believe it happened. We know what
it felt like to be on the short end of the stick last year, said
McCallum.
The Raiders are used to the big stage by now: along with
their second-place showing last year, they also placed third at
last years Esso Cup in Weyburn, Sask.
I think that was a huge tournament. It was good to learn
what it takes to be one of the top teams in the country. Some
of our girls believe that there was some unfinished business
carrying over from last year that we needed to take care of,
said Raiders head coach Paul Pozzi.
Sitting 11-5-2 in the AFHL, the Raiders began rounding into
form as the holiday break approached.
Weve been doing a lot better since the end of November,
since we came back from the Notre Dame tournament, said

against a lot of tougher teams and playing up to
their level.
The Raiders were waxing teams en route to the
tourney title. Finishing the round robin 3-0-1, they
stomped the Kootenay Wild 5-1, blanked the Vancouver Island Seals 9-0, smacked the Westman Wildcats 5-1 and skated to a 1-1 tie with the Melville
Prarie Fire. They also doused league-rival Calgary
Fire 5-0 in the semifinal on New Years Eve at the
Max Bell Centre #2.
We are experienced now and know what to expect, said Borbandy. We learned that you have to
come prepared in every game.
McCallum finished the tourney with one goal and
four assists, while Borbandy chipped in with three
helpers.
Emma is a second-year on defence and shes really smart, said Pozzi. She sees the ice really well,
gets pucks through and is really physical in her own
end. Hailey is a really good skater and has a great
shot. Theyre great to watch and easy to coach.
The Macs provided a chance to feel like a star,
playing in front of crowds exponentially larger than
their home crowd, and getting to share the same ice
surface as the Calgary Flames.
Its pretty motivating and I enjoy playing in front
of lots of fans. Most times, we play in the middle
of nowhere and its just parents at our games, said
McCallum.
McCallum earned some big-league bragging
rights in the cafeteria when school resumes. She

The Bisons got the
better of the Canadians, icing them 3-2
on the strength of goaltender Ben Laidlaw.
We got outplayed for a lot of the game, said Henry. Thats
the beauty of having a hot goaltender, you win games like
that with guys like him.
Laidlaw turned in 36 saves, as the Bisons were badly outshot 38-19.
Tied at two late in the third, defenseman Cole Clayton
took a pass at the Canadians blue line and went on a dangle
spree. Toe-dragging around one man, side-stepping another
and wheeling around a third defender, he snapped a wrister
on net that beat Lukas Shaw low glove side.
I just wanted to make something happen, said Clayton. I
stepped to the middle, buried my head and shot it. I looked
up and saw the crowd stand up, I knew it was in such a
great feeling.
Huber supplied a goal and an assist, Krebs chipped in with
two helpers and Tarun Fizer sniped a goal in the second
period

offensive outburst over the Moose Jaw Generals Dec. 30 at

In Hubers finest game of the tourney, he poured in a hat
trick, all three goals coming via the booming slapshot.
The first two goals came thanks to a pair of beauty faceoff dot to faceoff dot saucer passes from Krebs one was
great and one was exceptionally great. The
third clap-bomb came
on a turnover in front
of the Generals net. He
was later named player
of the game.

Scoreless after the
first, Payton Krebs
bagged his second goal
of the tourney on a
breakaway, sniping low
glove as he was falling
down to his knees.
Trentham, who tied the game late when the two teams met
earlier in the Alberta Midget Hockey League season, played
a vital role in the quarterfinal victory, scoring the second
goal on a backhand saucer pass on a two-on-one break with
Brandon Machado. He returned the favour later in the second when he stripped a Royals defenceman deep in their
zone, immediately stepping up Machado for the eventual
winner.
A questionable hand-pass stopped play with 10 seconds
left in the second. The Royals won the draw and dashed up
the ice, scoring with 6.4 seconds left, cutting the Bisons lead
down to one.
From that point on, the Royals dominated the Herd. In the
third period, the ice was heavily slanted towards the Bisons
end.
We held on with sheer luck and determination, said assistant coach Mike Langen. When it comes down to it, these
guys in the this room really dont like to lose.
CFR Bisons vs. Saskatoon Contacts
Dec. 31 at Max Bell Centre
After only trailing for 14 seconds in the round robin stage
and quarterfinal game, the Bisons gave up an early goal to
the Saskatoon Contacts and never recovered, losing 5-3 in
the Macs Midget AAA World Invitational Tournament semifinal Dec. 31 at Max Bell Centre #1.
Im really proud of these guys, said Bisons head coach
Sandy Henry. We had a really great tournament and we
learned a lot about ourselves. This will only help us going
forward into playoffs.
Both teams playing roughly three hours after winning a
quarterfinal matchup, neither team showed any effects of
fatigue.
The Bisons legs appeared fresh, as they were skating back
hard on defence, while the offence was creating several
chances in the other end.
The Contacts opened the scoring when their captain
Chance Adrian tipped in a point shot mid-way through the
opening frame.
Much like how the Bisons won a game earlier in the tournament with a hot goaltender, Contacts goaltender Rayce
Ramsay was there to turn away all the Bisons desperate efforts.
Also handicapping a Bisons comeback effort was the constant trip to the penalty box, deserved or not. The Bisons
picked up a too-many-men penalty while on the penalty kill
at the expiration of the first period. Zach Huber and Cole
Clayton would later pick up a four-minute minor each.
Tyler Petrie got the Bisons on the board with his first of
the tourney, sending a shot high, handcuffing Ramsay as the
puck floated up, over and down into the net.
Huber capped off an outstanding tournament by sniping
the Bisons second goal and his seventh of the tournament in
the third period.
Joel Krahenbil was threatening all tourney and finally got
rewarded for his efforts by banging in a loose rebound from
a Brandon Machado shot from the left half wall.
We went far and did well. Going 5-1 sounds pretty damn
good to me. Sometimes you just dont get the bounces to go
in, said Brett Trentham.
