The AST p e r s o n n e l were mainly i n t e r e s t e d in LZ-2 as

t h i s s i t e c o n t a i n e d t h e m a j o r i t y of s t r u c t u r a l d e t a i l of t h e

craft's

a i r f r a m e , p r o p u l s i o n and n a v i g a t i o n t e c h n o l o g y . The r e c o v e r y of f i v e
b o d i e s i n a damaged escape c y l i n d e r , p r e c l u d e d an i n v e s t i g a t i o n a t
LZ-1.

On a r r i v a l a t LZ-2, p e r s o n n e l a s s e s s e d t h e f i n d s a s n o t

b e l o n g i n g t o any a i r c r a f t , r o c k e t , weapons, o r b a l l o o n t e s t t h a t a r e
n o r m a l l y conducted from s u r r o u n d i n g b a s e s . F i r s t r e p o r t s i n d i c a t e d t h a t
t h e f i r s t c r a s h i n v e s t i g a t o r s , from R o s w e l l AAF t h a t LZ-1 was t h e
remains of a AAF t o p s e c r e t MOGUL b a l l o o n p r o j e c t . When s c i e n t i s t s

became apparent t o a l l concerned t h a t what had crashed in the d e s e r t

was something o u t o f t h i s w o r l d .

Interviews w i t h radar operators and o f f i c e r s from the

S i g n a l Corps

Engineering

Laboratories,

Fort

Monmouth,

N.J.,

were

tracking t h e s e objects o n - a n d - o f f s i n c e June 29 from S t a t i o n "A", a l l

i n d i c a t e d t h a t t h e s e t a r g e t s had p e r i o d i c a l l y remained s t a t i o n a r y f o r
minutes a t a t i m e , then would resume t h e i r o r i g i n a l c o u r s e , f l y i n g from
the s o u t h e a s t t o northwest, SCEL antennas had locked onto a f l i g h t o f
three o b j e c t s on 3 J u l y and l o s t them around 2330 MST on 4 July (a V-2'
was scheduled f o r launch which i s why SCEL S t a t i o n "A" was a b l e t o do
a track)

I t has been learned t h a t a t l e a s t s i x radar s t a t i o n s i n e a s t

Texas ( s e e d e t a i l e d r e p o r t i n attchment A ) , and radar s t a t i o n s a t

Alamogordo AAF and Kirtland AAF, had a l s o picked up t h e s e o b j e c t s on
the 4th a s

well.

Using t o p o g r a p h i c a l maps and t r i a n g u l a r i z a t i o n , a

l a s t known p o s i t i o n and bearing was c a l c u l a t e d which helped search

p a r t i e s to l o c a t e the general area. Detachment 3 of the 9393rd
Technical S e r v i c e s U n i t , a s s i g n e d t o Alamogordo AAF, was r e s p o n s i b l e
f o r the l o c a t i n g and t r a n s p o r t a t i o n o f the l a r g e s e c t i o n s of the
craft.
6.

A s p e c i a l r a d i o b i o l o g i c a l team accompanied by a SED

and s e c u r i t y d e t a i l from Sandia Base under orders from Colonel S . V.

Hasbrouck,

USA, Armed Forces S p e c i a l Weapons P r o j e c t , secured the

immediate area surrounding the crash s i t e . S e l e c t s c i e n t i s t s from

The G e n e r a l A d v i s o r y Committee of t h e Atomic E n e r g y Commission, most
n o t a b l y D R . J . ROBERT OPPENHEIMER, was identified at LZ-2 as w e l l as
o t h e r members. Among PAPERCLIP s p e c i a l i s t i d e n t i f i e d a t L Z - 2 were DR.
WERNHER VON BRAUN ( F o r t B l i s s ) ; DR. ERNEST STEINHOFF ( A M C ) ; and DR.
HUBERTUS STRUGHOLD (AEROMEDICAL LAB, RANDOLPH FIELD).

Because of the s t r i n g e n t s e c u r i t y measures t h a t were i n

place a t both crash s i t e s , the team was not able t o gain access to the
s e v e r a l locations where wreckage and bodies are being h e l d . CIC member
of the team was able to l e a r n t h a t several bodies were taken t o the
h o s p i t a l a t Roswell AAF and others t o e i t h e r Los Alamos, Wright Field
Patterson AAF, and Randolph Field for s e c u r i t y r e a s o n s . I t i s believed
t h a t t h i s dispersion was on the orders of General Thomas Handy, Fourth
Army Hdqrs. Remains of the powerplant were taken to Alamogordo AAF and
Kirtland AAF. Structural d e b r i s and assorted parts were taken to AMC,
Wright F i e l d . Other remains, were

transported

across

theWSPG t o the

storage f a c i l i t i e s of the NRL. All t h i s was accomplished by 1730 MST

7 July.
8.

On 7 J u l y , L t . General Nathan Twining arrived a t

Alamogordo AAF for a s e c r e t meeting with AAF Chief of Staff Spaatz

and t o view recovered remains of c r a f t from L Z - 2 . On 8 J u l y , Twining
v i s i t e d Kirtland AAF t o inspect p a r t s recovered from powerplant. On

9 July, Twining and staff flewtoWSPGto inspect pieces of craft

being stored there and on 10 J u l y , made inspection of R&D f a c i l i t i e s
a t Alamogordo and then returned t o Wright Field. I t i s believed t h a t
Twining and s t a f f i s preparing a d e t a i l e d r e p o r t of both incidents
and briefings l a t e r t o follow. It is also the b e l i e f of CIC t h a t
General Eisenhower w i l l see a showing of recoveries sometime i n
l a t e August t h i s year. The President was given a limited b r i e f i n g

i n t e r e s t was c u r t a i l e d and a c c e s s t o s t o r e d c r a f t a t Los Alamos was
d e n i e d upon r e q u e s t of Deputy COS L t . G e n e r a l C o l l i n s . I n q u i r i e s t o
b a s e s i n v o l v e d was r e s t r i c t e d by G e n e r a l Vandenberg d u r i n g t h e d u r a t i o n
of r e c o v e r y e f f o r t s . A l l t e l e t y p e , t e l e p h o n e and r a d i o t r a n s m i s s i o n s
were monitored f o r any d i s c l o s u r e s of t h e f i n d s . To m a i n t a i n s e c r e c y
of s i t e L Z - 2 , t h e CO of R o s w e l l AAF was a u t h o r i s e d t o g i v e a b r i e f
p r e s s r e l e a s e t o l o c a l p a p e r i n which 8th AF Hdqrs. promptly denied
rumors t h a t t h e Army had f l y i n g s a u c e r s i n t h e i r p o s s e s s i o n which

h a n d l e d some of t h e w r e c k a g e , o r v i e w e d b o d i e s were d e t a i n e d under t h e

McNab law u n t i l a l l remaining evidence was s e c u r e d i n r e s t r i c t e d b a s e s .
W i t n e s s e s were d e b r i e f e d by CIC and warned of the c o n s e q u e n c e s of
t a l k i n g t o t h e p r e s s . So f a r , s e c r e c y seems t o be w o r k i n g .
9.

A l l c i v i l i a n and m i l i t a r y p e r s o n n e l i n v o l v e d w i t h

the

r e c o v e r y o p e r a t i o n s had "need t o know"' a c c e s s w i t h p r o p e r s e c u r i t y

c l e a r a n c e s . Though s e v e r a l MPs s u f f e r e d nervous breakdowns r e s u l t i n g i n
one committing s u i c i d e , MP d e t a i l s from Alamogordo and K i r t l a n d
s e c u r i t y f u n c t i o n s v e r y w e l l . Ground p e r s o n n e l from

With t h e pending a p p r o v a l of JAMES FORRESTAL as new

S e c r e t a r y of D e f e n s e , i t i s c e r t a i n t h a t he w i l l be b r i e f e d on c e r t a i n
a s p e c t s of t h e d i s c o v e r i e s . The only C a b i n e t member t o d a t e t h a t may
know of t h e d e t a i l s i s S e c r e t a r y of S t a t e M a r s h a l l . I t has become known
t o CIC t h a t some of t h e r e c o v e r y o p e r a t i o n was s h a r e d w i t h R e p r e s e n t a t i v e

JOHN F. KENNEDY, M a s s a c h u s e t t s Democrat e l e c t e d to c o n g r e s s i n 46. Son of

JOSEPH P . KENNEDY, Commission on O r g a n i z a t i o n of t h e E x e c u t i v e Branch of
t h e Government. KENNEDY had l i m i t e d d u t y as n a v a l o f f i c e r a s s i g n e d t o
Naval Intelligence during war. It is believed that information was obtained
from source in Congress who is close to Secretary for Air Force.
11.

As to the bodies recovered at LZ-2, it appeared that none

of the five crew members survived entry into our atmosphere due to
unknown causes.DR.DETLEV BRONK has been asked to assist in the autopsy
of one well preserved cadaver to be done by MAJOR. CHARLES K. REA. From
what descriptions the team was able to learn and from photographs taken
by intelligence photographers, the occupants appear in most respects
human with/some anatomical differences/in the head, eyes, hands and feet
They have a slight build about five feet tall, with grayish-pink skin
color. They have no hair on their bodies and clothed with a tight fitting
flight suit that appears to be fire proof (some of the bodies looked
as if they had been burned on head and and h a n d ) . Their overall stature
reminds, one of young children. It is believed that there were male and
female genders present, but was hard to distinguish.
12.

The most disturbing aspect of this investigation was-

there were other bodies found not far from LZ-1 that looked as if they
had been disected as you would A frog. It is not known if army field
surgeons had performed exploratory surgery on these bodies. Animal parts
were reportedly discovered inside the craft at LZ-2 but this cannot be
confirmed. The team has reserved judgement on this issue.
13.

Our assessment of this investigation rests on two

assumptions: 1) Either this discovery was an elaborate and well orchestrated

hoax (maybe by the Russians), or; 2.) Our country has played host to

beings from another planet.

14.

Until more data can be acquired from other intelligence

sources, it is the opinion of the team, that the investigation be e x p a n d e d

to include sources that might elucidate other possibilities not found by
contemporary science. It is also recommended that appropriate budgets be
allocated to facilitate future assignments that the unit may be called
upon to perform. Until further orders, this investigation will continue.
