QUESTION 1
A scientist proposed the following equation state:
C

P RT B
2
3
Vm V m V m
Show that the equation leads to critical constants of the gas in terms of B and C and an
expression for the critical compression factor.

QUESTION 2
A sample of 1.00 mol perfect gas molecules with Cp,m =

R
is put through the following

cycle (Assume that the initial temperature is 298 K):

a)

Constant-volume heating to twice its initial volume

b)

Reversible, adiabatic expansion back to its initial temperature

c)

Reversible isothermal compression back to 1.00 atm

Calculate q, w, U and H for each step and overall.

QUESTION 3
The cycle involved in the operation of an internal combustion engine is called the Otto cycle.
Air can be considered to be working substance and can be assumed to be a perfect gas. The
cycle consists of the following steps:
a)

Reversible adiabatic compression from A to B

b)

Reversible-constant volume pressure increase from B to C due to the combustion of a

small amount of fuel

c)

Reversible adiabatic expansion from C to D

d)

Reversible and constant-volume pressure decreased back to A

Therefore;
i)

Express the above cycle graphically.

ii)

Determine the change in entropy (of the system and of surroundings) for each step of
the cycle

iii)

Determine an expression for the efficiency of the cycle, assuming that the heat is
supplied in Step (b).

iv)

Evaluate the efficiency for a compression ratio of 10:1. Assume that, in state A, V =
4.00dm3, p = 1.00 atm and T = 300 K, that VA = 10VB , pc/pb = 5 and that
C p,m =
